Hey Folk

Lets talk about oldtime shotgun Chaps.

The pic show a reproduced pair of 1895 F.A. Meanea Style Shotguns. I have the originals in my own collection and try to reproduce them as good as possible. The leather came from Mur and McDonald.... years ago. What a shame, this great Company is out of buissnes.... :'( :'( :'( They did a beautifull job on there leather. Somebody told me that The F.A. Meanea Saddlery bought ther leather also from Mur and McDonald in 1880 till 1927.

Have a great day

Hey Bob

I use 1,3 to 1,5 mm pepple grain calf leather on all of my Chaps. I dy them by my selfe. I nerver use chrome tanned leather....

I dont use Chrome tanned my self. I got it from a guy that wanted me to try make chaps of it. The next batwings I'll make will be with 2.5 mm veg tanned leather. Is 500 Euro to much to to take for batwings? Its hard to set Price.

Hey Bob
I am not able to set your pice of the chaps.... anyway. It belongs to the time you need to fix them and the price of the material you use...
To find out my price I use thre thing: price of the material, time I need to do, and how much would I spend by my self to have something like that.... So I find my prices... I have never look to other leathercrafters priclist.... Sometimes the customers are happy with my prices, sometimes the think it was to high.... anyway I call a price on something and that is the total. I never go down with the price....

I am sure that does´t help you much :-\
have a nice day

Hey Folks
Another pair of shotguns. A reproduction of 1880´s J.S Collins style shotguns.
The legs are sewn together, not laced as on several other models...

It helps Andy. It takes plenty of leather to make chaps so the Price will be there after. Have you made any woolis? I will trye that some time.

Andy Rombach

Hey my friend
I use leather on the back of the leg, and canvas lining at the fur part, as on the originals.

Those woolies really look nice, but I can't immagine the trouble it is to pull all the goggone burrs, goatheads, grass stickers and such, not to mention the cactus thorns out of them after riding through the Texas hill country.
I will no longer respond to the rants of the small minded that want to sling mud rather than discuss in an adult manner.

Most of the woolies, nearly all where use in the northern staats like Wyoming, Colorado, or Wyoming, Canada as well.
There are not much if this cactus...

How do you stitch the yoke and the backleather, do you shave some wool of? ;D

Andy Rombach

I do not shave the wool of. 4 parts came together: the fur, the back leather, the lining and the keter (do not know the word in english) sorry. On fullsize chaps it could be 1cm thick and I stich it by hand....8 stiches per inch!! After I sew it together I pull them over outside to inside, so you might not see the sewing line from the outide... it is hard to tellll. My english is not good enough.... sorry about that. Will try to make some pics and post this weekend:-)))

So long and have a geat day

I know what you mean Andy. Its like when I stitch up a brass bag, i sew it inside out and turn it when finished.

Hey Folks

Another pair of F.A. Meanea style Chaps, made out of fine calf leather.

Have fun

Andy, on the chaps shown above, is the edge of the leather left raw or do you turn it? I don't mean the belt - the leggings and pockets.
Skeet

Andy Rombach

Hey Skeet
Does not realy understand your question... what means raw???

sorry
Andy

Skeeter Lewis

Andy, this is a pair of my chaps - the only ones I've made so far. The edge of the leather is visible. I haven't tried to turn the leather to give a neater effect. What do you do to the edge of the leather - just leave it alone? It's not thick enough to burnish.
Skeet
Raw means 'left alone'....'nothing done to it'...
