I have a request to make a set of holsters, with room for Morgan dollars to be set into the loop. I am thinking a slightly smaller hole that the coin, beveled from the rear, and maybe a light pigskin backing to hold it in?

Is there a better way?

I am going to build the same basic holster as this one, but with a permanent loop, and the coins in the center of the loop:

Should look good Dalton,I think you have it right, a little smaller opening than the dollar and you should be fine.

Tandy Leather Factory has Fake Morgans conchos with screw backs.
I believe that they are not flat.
You could silver solder chicago screws on the back of common date coins.
Would be the best way to keep a real coin .
A common morgan is worth about 26 at melt value today.
If you go with the backed route I would  glue coin down. and then stitch  1/4 or so  border around coin .

I tried to talk him into the screwback conchos, but he wants real Morgans in there. He is supplying them at least. I might make an extra plain loop to go with the holsters as well, just in case.

I would think that your idea of making the hole a little undersize would work fine.  If you used contact cement on the back of the coin and then cemented a thin piece of leather to the back side of the loop amd the coin - maybe a circle of 2 oz that's  about 3/8" or so larger in diameter  than the coin to allow for the thickness of the coin and enough to have 1/4" or so of the leather circle of 2 oz glued to the back of the loop?  If the loop is wide enough, you could even make the diameter of the 2 oz "backer" a little larger.  That way, you wouldn't have to damage the coin by trying to attach wires and it they were ever removed in years to come, the contact cement could easily be cleaned off.
