I think our hero has good stuff in him,,,,,,,,,,and at the same time,,,just fresh from a war on which he was on the losing side ,,,he has his personal demons. I find his paradoxical character very interesting.

The Swede really is eerie !

The preacher worries me !

I find the whore with the chin tattoos enchanting in a off-beat kinda way. She could cash my check anytime.

I haven't missed a show and I don't think I'll miss any episodes now !

Gotta agree with everything you've said here Marshal, including Eva of the tattoed chin  ;D

The whore with the tattooed chin made me think - "Maori". I didn't think that such facial tattoos were done by prairie Indians.

The Prairie Cree, Santee nSioux, and a few other tribes, especially those  that originated in the Great Lakes and Upper Missouri area practiced such facial tatoos on women. IIRC There's a Karl Bodmer print of an Indian woman with such tatoos.

I can't remember for sure but didn't some of the Great Basin tribes do that also?  Seems to ring a bell.

Re Acents:

years ago I saw Sorrel Burke (played Boss Hogg on Dukes of Hazzard) on a show talking about dialects. (guess he was a voice coach of sorts) anyways he said that the Texas and Tenn.  speech patterns were identical, except one was done with a higher pitch, cant remember which was which but it was interesting....

Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing historic depictions of Indians with such facial tattoos .....

The kilt I wore at the cap & ball event was an Irish green "Utilikilt" made by my talented wife. She refused to let me wear my $800 Glasgow-made wool kilt in my 'family' tartan - Birch.
The sett was designed and registered by my kilt making name sake, Robin Birch of Glasgow. He's retired now, but sold us the material for our kilts. Look it up on Google. It's actually quite attractive; not that I'm prejudiced .... ;>)

I'd have to wear PJ's under it right now. Bloody cold out there .....  Came by my alias when I bought a '66 carbine with the initials 'PH' engraved on it in beautiful script. I just HAD to take advantage of it.

Remarkable photo! Looks like someone on the show did some research. I wonder if the lady in the pic submitted voluntarily, or if she had to held down .... ?

Think this sort of tattoo will catch on during the current craze for the art form? It sure would be unique and you wouldn't likely see anything similar on the street.

I've always avoided tattoos. My Dad's arms were covered with them from his Navy days and I remember many of my Army buddies waking up with sore arms wondering where in hell they got that #@!%^&* tattoo! Often they depicted something you wouldn't want your mother to see.

Worth noting is that those of us from Norge where often called "Swede" by those from the south during the 1800s.

My Great-Grandmother's oldest brother was known as "Swede" when he worked in a dry goods store in St. Joseph before heading back to the Dakota's.

I was watching some of the cast and crew notes and they had quite a few folks contributing to the show.

The only cartridge guns you will find are those Yellowboys and a Spencer and Henry's. Not one single cartridge pistol (aside from prop conversions) will be used... unless its a S&W Model 1.

I won't harangue you folks about the guns, that's been done elsewhere, but I do have a problem with the Cheyenne. In the last episode Wes Studi, a Cheyenne Chief, who is a genius actor and full blood Cherokee, had his son race the train back to town. This is picky, I know, but there was a light saddle under the blanket, as well as stirrups and the horse was iron shod. It makes riding hell bent for election safer for the rider, but the Cheyenne didn't use saddles or stirrups, and Indian ponies were barefoot. BTW, Wes Studi has played characters from may other American Indian nations, but he finally had the gift of playing a Cherokee in 2009's The Only Good Indian, where he is a very conflicted bounty hunter, trying to live like a white man, bringing his own people in for bounty. The film takes place in the early 1900's, and he rides a motorcycle, carries a Mauser 96 pistol and what looks like a Remington Model 8 rifle with a telescopic sight. I'd recommend this film if for nothing more that Wes Studi's performance. ;D

Very observant about the saddle under the blanket and the horse shoes!

I confess that at times I get caught up in the story and miss some of the details. The movie makers count of 'suspension of belief' at times to facilitate the plot.
Audiences are getting to be more sophisticated and expect more attention to such things. Our days of innocence are gone. The 'B' movies and serials we grew up on are now like cartoons - white hats, fringed shirts, etc.

I recently read that the actor playing "The Swede", Christopher Heyerdahl, is of Norwegian descent, born in British Columbia.  He says he copied his Fathers accent to play the role/.  Thor Heyerdahl, the sailor, is his Fathers cousin.

Except for the pilot (first episode) I had missed the shows when originally aired.

Thus I had looked forward to today's Marathon with Great Expectations and Anticipation.

Perhaps I have become jaded, but the numerous "incorrect issues" (nearly all of which have been previously mentioned)
began to pile one atop another and finally get my goat, until I found myself yelling at the TV :

"I can take all the brass framed pistols! I CAN TAKE that they are trying to blast flat Dirt!
But  DadGummit! You are trying to Dig Dirt!
Whyforever are you taking a Sledge Hammer to Smack the Dirt !!! Just Dig It up! "

I have completely lost my "Suspension of Disbelief" which is absolutely vital to continue :-(

It is most unfortunate that the producers, directors, and writers did not avail themselves of the talent and knowledge available, and instead put out yet another piece of schlock.

I can say I liked the suits and hats.

We have switched over to The Dog Whisperer until I find my "Crossfire Trail" DVD and new version of "True Grit". Those folks knew how to get it right, even to the point of using an open top colt and a bolt action Remington-Keene .

Professor Marvel, I have recorded all the shows but have yet to view more than the pilot, just have to many important things that need done.

The dirt bothered me in the pilot more than anything except that they said they were building near Council Bluffs Ioway.  Well that came much later when there was a connection from the east and a bridge across the river.

Major 2

The purpose , is to entertain ( so we will watch then try and sell us on their products commercials )

Like you Professor, I did not stay up to watch the 10PM original airings ..Oh I tried ... I tried to get past the Propmaster's video
clip telling me , his research  ::) " that a brass frame 1960 non clone was a Griswald ( Griswald & Gunnison )
or a 1866 was the "only" cartridge firing rifle avaiable at the time.

So I tried, to watch.... I really did...  it had a good gritty look.... but I'm sorry the story was to thin and to slow....

I flipped it off, flipped back once or twice ... then FLIPPED off for good.... I was not entertained, and have no idea whom was selling what !

"Crossfire Trail" DVD and new version of "True Grit".  were good  ( liked "Last Stand at Saber River" & Quigley too )

I was even entertained by Cowboys & Aliens ... well once anyway.
when planets align...do the deal !

Dakota Widowmaker

Well, if its that hard for folks to suffer throughh how do you keep your DVDs of any John Wayne movie from flying across the room?

I have watched it from the beginning and give them just as much leeway with certain facts and events as I do John Wayne and John Ford movies.

Compared to all the other crap on TV, this show is a breath of fresh air.
