Duh, we know that. The issue here is that with the lever fully open, the carrier is up.  My club, and I'm sure others, doesn't allow loading with the muzzle pointed anywhere but at the target with the bolt closed. To put it differently, my club doesn't allow a closed bolt anywhere but on the firing line with the sights on the target.

Back to the spacer issue- I built two -they don't look as good as you folks' (I used a 4d finishing nail instead of the brass screw), but the one a little different is longer, so I can use it on sandbags or a rest for sighting in/ testing loads.  It is 6 1/2" long.

Are we talking about shooting at a cowboy match, or shooting at a regular gun club? You may think other clubs have such a requirement, but I have never heard of one. At every cowboy match I have ever been to we load the Henry just like any other rifle. Action closed, hammer down. Muzzle pointing in a safe direction. Of course we don't have a loading gate, but other than that we load the Henry no differently than any other rifle.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

DJ,

Ah, there is the difference. I don't shoot CAS matches. I'm talking at a regular club firing line. I am a bulls-eye paper target shooter.  ::)

OK, now things are making a little, sense here ....

Some of us (me included) have wrongfully assumed that EVERYONE with an iron in this fire is a CAS competitor. Didn't occur to me that a Cowboy gun could or would be used any other way.

- assume - v., to take for granted without actual proof

Like the man sez: If you 'assume', you make an (_*_) out of 'u' and an (_*_) out of 'me'; or words to that effect.

To clarify - we load hammer down on an empty chamber.

The spacer I use has a brass screw in it as well, I removed the steel one as I didn't want to ruin the finish on my Henry.

I also put a coat of varnish on it to prevent swelling. ;)

No, not everyone is a gamer on this board, but, for those of us who have competed, its that little things that make the biggest difference during the matches.

Using a mag spacer in a Henry is gamey? I regard it primarily as a safety feature.

A while back, some well meaning gent gave me the low down on making my Henry more competitive - drilling holes in the carrier block, etc. I put the brakes on him pretty quick, telling him that ALL my CAS guns were basically stock and were going to remain so.
If I was interested in 'race guns', I wouldn't be shooting a Henry to begin with, as there are other guns that better lend themselves to such butchery.
