Rowdy,

True....modern cowboy ammo produces less velocity than the original b.p. cartridge. 

However, there is a difference in ballistics between brands of lead bulleted ammo .... with Magtech being the fastest.
Velocity is on par with the Winchester and Remington jacketed ammo (1,190 f.p.s.) and the pure lead bullet will produce a better wound channel than it's jacketed counterpart.

I realize you guys are talking about the 44-40, I used a 38-40 Uberti 1873 [24.25 in barrel] to take a 98 pound doe on the 28th of November. I used a Remington 180 gr factory load, shot all the way thru at 41 paces, was kind of surprised it went all the way thru to be honest, not sure about the velocity. Guess I should have listened to my DAD, he used a 38-40 for 40 yrs for deer using 2400 powder.

The 38 WCF is an excellent round.  If I wasn't such a big 44 WCF fan, it just might top my list.
