Couple of inexpensive Cowboyish knives.....

I was looking for some type of knife that might share the CAS flavor and not cost an arm and a leg.

Looking through the Kennesaw Cutlery catalog www.kennesawcutlery.com I saw two faux Indian knives that I thought might fit the bill.

The "Bear Hunter" and the "Wolf Hunter" from the United Frontier Collection.

The Bear Hunter measures 8.5" overall. And included a really weird "pinkish" leather sheath.

First thing I did was take some walnut wood stain and stain the leather to make it dark brown and a little distressed looking.





The Bear Hunter cost $26.99

The "Wolf Hunter" is a much smaller knife at 6 3/4" overall length and a much more heavily beaded sheath. But still the same pinkish leather. Back to the walnut stain!





The Wolf Hunter cost $25.55

So for around $50 I got a couple knives that just might serve to finish off my garb...........

As soon as I get back from hunting I'm going to take some old deer antlers I have and make a couple of Stag handles for both of them.....Yea! That's the ticket!

Look nice and you can't beat the price. Just put together my first knife, a Helle Tollekniv blade and brass guard with a stag handle. The wife has a contact for elk and deer antlers out in Colorado (our 3 dogs love 'em) the entire cost was around $25. It's nothing fancy and it pales in comparison with the artwork I've seen here but I'm happy with the result.

Not my knives and not my business, but what's wrong with the brass-pinned burl scales on those two? Looks very authentic to me.

Actually, those pins are pretty close to an original I have that has a beaded Sioux sheath.

There are even a couple of decorative copper pins as well.

Next time, go easier on the dye - natural hide would darken, certainly - just not quite 'that' dark - however, exposure to sunlight should cause some fading.

You could even re-lace the throat and sewn seam with artificial sinew, and the laced seam and lighter-colored rawhide or rivets as well - giving an older effect.

That was my thought also, but a lot of folks know I'm not fond of antler for a working knife, blood makes them very slippery.

I actually bouight that from a feller over at sass,he said it was a replica of the one Sam Elliot used in either the sacketts ot The Quick and the Dead,he did back in 80s? I sure don't know where he got it becuase iv'e looked for them and never seen another. It's Elk antler and i can barely get my fingers around it.

I love looking at custom made knives and have made a few over the years, mostly cause I could not find what I wanted in the knive  I was looking to use in a particular job. I do have several knives I just look at both modern and those of yesteryears. The wife says I am like her kid brother years ago collecting marbels and baseball cards.

I have an Arkansas Toothpick with a 2.25 inch wide blade 5/16 thick with a coffine wildcherry wood handle. A also have a couple Bowie knives with damascus blades in 10 & 11 inch blades with bone and brass handles. A Green River skinner I purchased 30 years ago that is really quick to sharpen and made out of tool steel. Its been a great asset in dressing out my deer & elk.

I also have a Richardson Bowie that is 12 inches in blade length with elk antler in stainless steel blade and guards. A boot knive  that is 7 inches long also in stainless, very tuff knives both but not as easy for me to sharpen as the tool steel or the Damascus. I am working now on a Bowie with 3/8 thick tool steel and wildcherry wood handle wilth brass rivets. The blade is going to be 14 inch long with a blood groove and 2.6 inches wide. The handle will be made out of stag antler

James made the sheath for this skinner,i think he done a fantastic job,i love beaded sheaths.The skinner style never cuaght my attention much till i got this one,one of my favorites now and it is very sharp,if i had to fight with a knife this would be my go to,grab that thing,your thumb goes to the right place swing and slice
