When & where will the 2012 National be held? Or will it not be determined until the 2012 convention?
I need to know so I can submit for the time off.

The dates have not been dertermined yet.

I HOPE it is the 3rd weekend in June (June 13-16). That would insure all of the schools are out and, for us knifemakers and collectors, it would not conflict with the largest annual knife show in the U.S.

Setting the dates of the National Match is the resposibility of the Executive Board.  They are working out the details with Duke Henry (match director) and the officials at the Westside Sportsmans Club.

An announcement will be made.....

I was hoping to see an unofficial decision by now so that I could reserve the dates on my department's time off request calendar due by the end of this year, i.e. tomorrow 12/29. I've heard a lot of speculation about the second week in June, and a lot of confusion as to where the actual dates that constitute the second week fall on.

I will be able to reserve our NCOWS Convention dates, at least.

Hopefully no one will put their name first on those dates before I get confirmation.
After all, someone has to know the dates or they could not be submitting it to the Congress for a vote

Is there a tentative schedule of events?  Anything going on 6/6 or is it safe to arrive on 6/6 later in the day?  Thanks.

Right now it looks like workers will shoot through June 4 and 5. Think long range will be on the 6 with side matches on the 7. Main match on 8 and 9. Awards dinner on June 9 in the evening. Something new this year, trap under the lights, not sure the date. This is what I understand from Duke Henry. Hope everyone come to have a good time and brings plenty of ammo. Tj

This is what I have been told and is subject to change. But will give you an ideal of what is planned. Do not have a list of side matches yet, but will be enough for everyone to have fun. Tj

Texas Jack,

One recommendation I'd make:  start the long range match as early as possible.  I spoke with Duke about this last year.  The last few years, the heat has been very hard on the long distance shooters.  The match was called early this past year due to the bad heat.  I realize that resources are limited, but some portable sun shelters / sun umbrellas would help that match as well.

Also, since heat is such a problem, has anyone considered an evening black powder side event?  This type of match only requires a few portable spot lights on 2 or 3 stages.

Pancho. If you spoke with Duke Henry, I am sure West Side will do the best they can. Duke did tell me that the Long Range will have several yards more this year. Tj

I'm with you on the night shooting but WSSC will only let you shoot after dark on the trap range, I wanted to have a stage after dark because the moon will be two day into a full moon that week..but they said NO it in the rules..CC

Hard to believe that a cowboy from Texas thinks it HOT in Indiana in June..it rained last year..

Rules  . . . . we don't need no stinkin' rules!!!

Seriously, I've attended a few major CAS events around the area that offer a "Night Shoot" which are usually very well attended.  They usually restrict everyone to BP or subs and the challenge is seeing who makes the biggest fireball come out of their weapon.  Usually 2 or 3 stages have some utility lights illuminating the targets.

If WSSC will only allow a night trap shoot, perhaps we as a group could strive to make it a "Black Powder Trap Shoot".   We could have prizes for "Best Muzzle Flash - SxS" and "Best Muzzle Flash - Repeater".

Maybe they will be throwing those little "glow-in-the-dark" clay birds.  I shot at those last year at a charity sporting clay shoot.  It felt like I was shooting at little UFO's.

What do you think?

How long is the long range? If I don't wind up at the Blade show I might try shooting that this year since I've never done anything like that.

A friend of mine used to shoot down at Hooten Old Town years ago and I always thought those long range matches were like 3 or 4 hundred yards but didn't see anything at west side to allow that distance. Not unless they shoot from the trap range down into the cowboy range.

Been involved with NCOWS for several months now and this National shoot sounds like fun. Would anyone be willing to share some details and information for someone considering attending for the first time?

There is a film roll of last years National.  Enjoyed shooting with you today.
