Well lets see -
place holster on belt
cinch belt around waist
place revolver in holster
walk tall and proud

Point - give us some information on your new acquisition.  8)
Did you trade the '63 for the '58?

Nope,

I know very little about this particular early model Pietta 1858 .... but I got the pistol, a spare cylinder, and a holster for $190 .... so if there is not too many 'smith-level problems, I think I did okay .... I'll have to wait and see if my 'beginners luck' at buying weapons is still at work .... I'll keep you all informed as the adventure continues ....

Wildman, I don't know, I've got a print out in my homemade reference book that it's listed on.  I did an internet search and like you, couldn't find any past 2003.

Wildman,

I didn't wax them: they came out of the shipping box that purty!

John Smith,

I think you would be doing all of us a service if you published that list ... the post would be worth archiving I would think .... hint , hint ...

Guess they have not figured out how to clearly stamp "EGJKORQVWXY"  The Italians need to purchase the stamps winchester has been using on its tangs since the 1800's

Congrats on the new pistol.  Looks great.  The apparent hot tip for reliability is purchasing Treso nipples and using Remmington 11 caps.  They will run about 35 bucks a cylinder.  Not totally necessary right away, but it is pretty important to get some proper fitting caps.  If you go to the dark arts child board in the darksiders den Mako has pretty much written a doctoral dissertation on caps, nipple cones etc.  Really interesting and some really cool illustrations.

From what I can tell most chain fires come from the cap end, one of the reason for the small slots on the remmingtons.
There are also some really good discussions of cylinder loaders.  I have the powder inc cylinder loader, works pretty good but the set screw that holds the crossbar in place tends to loosen.  Not a problem if you are smart enough to keep an allen wrench in the shooters kit but...  I am thinking of actually figuring out exactly where I want it and drilling a place for the end of the allen screw into the upright rod, or loctiting the set screw,

I bought my first from cabelas mail order marked BB so that must have been in 92 while I lived in DC area.  Never fired it a whole lot.  Picked up a second marked CD a couple of years ago at the Glendale Cabelas on time when I was demo-ing Fly Tying and got to buy things at the employee rate for the day.  The ultimate plan is to shoot frontiersman.  Will probably sneak up on it by way of frontier cartridge.   That will let me work out the kinks with the rifle and shot gun loads.  Need to practice a lot on loading the remmingtons and also modify my gun cart or pull a captain baylor and carry a loading table.  Took me 19 years to acquire the 2nd pistol so one or two more working on the gun cart will be really quick - by my apparent standards anyway.

Saw in another post you were concerned about the 45/70 recoil.  My RB with the 26 inch heavy barrel is about 13 lbs according to the bathroom scale and my sharps about 10.  BP loads of 65 grain and 70 grains FFg under 415 grainers is no big deal, more of a shove than a kick.  Smokeless at approx 1300 - 1350 are a little more stout and sharper vs the BP shove but manageable.  I personally am a 1950 model so we are pretty close.  Shot 50 rounds 70 grain FFg off the bench saturday with no ill effects. approx 50/50 split sharps and RB

If the same progression is followed:

CF   2011
CH  2012
CI   2013
CL  2014
CM  2015

etc.?

I wonder if the bottom horizontal stroke on an 'E' date letter was struck too faint on your revolver, Wadd? A 2010 manufacture date, CE? Either that or we have discrepancies in our respective date lists used, which wouldn't surprise me.

RCJ,

I pulled the Remmie out and rechecked it ... it is definitely a CF!

Perhaps I got a brand new used pistol/

Does the serial number of R400XXX match the mark?

The back line on what appears to be the H is very distinct as is the center line. A small amount of vertical line appears on the right side of the H, maybe 30% of the way up and down from center. The top and bottom of the left side of the H is very distinct, with no horizontal lines going to the right. The mark is stamped on the right side of the frame directly below the front of the cylinder. The Walker with the 2009 stamp (CD) is on the bottom of the frame directly below the proof mark (PN) and the Uberti stamp. WM
