Meat on the ground is meat in the freezer! Great shooting with a great round, my favorite also.

Today we fired the grill up and cooked Deer sausage and Deer burger . He was a big Buck but he sure was tasty . The breakfast sausage was the best , plan on slapping them on a biscuit and eating .

........ The Georgia Arms site lists the 250gr .45 colt "cowboy" loads with a velocity of 725fps. Not what I would choose to hunt with.

In a 24" barrel, velocity would likely be right around 1,000 f.p.s. as it was with other .45 Colt Cowboy ammunition I tested.
While it is more comforting to have a round producing 1,300 f.p.s. or so, the old 45 C0lt from a handgun at 850 f.p.s. probably accounted for many deer over the years......

Nice harvest.

Rowdy,
Thank you for the update on the bullet performance.

Savvy Jack recently tested.44-40 original bullet (pure lead) and a 75/1 lead tin mix over b.p. in ballistic gelatin.
Interesting!

Thanks for the info  27 inches of penetration is very good . This old round loaded at 1300 fps works as good now as it did in the 1870's .

Don't you love the Deluxe short Rifle .

Rowdy,

I currently have a model 92 src and rifle and have been considering getting a Uberti 73 and just can't decide between the 20" & 24" rifles with half round barrels and I believe that you have both.  This is a fun rifle and will be used for some hunting and I'm torn between the portability of the 20" vs the longer sight radius and balance of the 24".  My ideal choice would likely be a 24", half round rifle with a button mag and straight stock but no one offers a button mag option to my knowledge.  Caliber would be .44 WCF.  I would appreciate your experience with the different barrel lengths.  Thanks

I prefer the 24 1/2 . It has the half octagon barrel . I have a short rifle but I like the longer barrel , I guess I need to trade it for another long barrel . Good luck with the rifle , and Happy Hunting .

Here is a picture of my short rifle  and my old model Cimarron . Now I wish the rifle had a 24 1/2 inch barrel and the pistol had a 4 3/4 . I looked on Cimarron site and what I want is a mp522 . Hope I have one to carry next Deer season .

Hey Rowdy!! Really really nice buck in that first photo, and that second one ain't nothing to sneeze at either!  Beauty of a rifle and REALLY love the buckskin duds as well. It's not often I say this to a guy BUT love your outfit!!!  How about a little description of what you're wearing and where you got it all. I dare say that buckskin outfit isn't something you bought off of the rack at Walmart ! ::). Thanks for the posting. JohnnyF

Thanks for the compliment . The shirt is a brain Tanned Buckskin from Bear Tooth Billy . His wife made it for him and he gained a few pounds , so he sold it to me  ;D ;D ;D . The pant are Elk skin I pick them up several years ago at a shoot . The other feller had also out grown his , my lucky break . But my favorite part of this years hunt was I used a 44 wcf with a BP sub. load that I had been loading and shooting since last summer . When I shot that Buck and he went down I was a HAPPY HUNTER .   I was field dressing my Deer and saw the damage that antique round did it was amazing . Both lungs were basically reduced to two blood clots .

Thanks for the compliment . I don't think they use paint to give it the white color . After they remove the hide and meat they use beetles to eat away the rest of the gunk . Then they degrease the skull . What made it so shinny was a clear coat . I am real pleased with it and I was able to have it back in a few months .
