Hello Everybody,

I have a Uberti Smith & Wesson new Model Russian that I am trying to make a holster for.  I have Wills patterns (thank you so much for your product  ;D) the West Texas and the Slim Jim, but I want to try a little bit of "custom" touches and alterations.  I am using them as a starting point.  I do not know if any of you have any patterns of a similar holster you would be willing to sell, even if it is not for a schofield or Russian, but I can change gun models easier than a whole new holster.

First, I want to change the pattern of the skirt.  I like the type that is round, I have heard it called the Dogbone Style, or the Mexican Loop Holster.  I really Like Will Ghormley's Yuma Holster on his website, and that is kind of the idea I am looking for.  It is similar to Chuck Burrows Tejano Holsters.  My question is, how does the skit look?  I have seen many pictures of the holsters on the belt, but not a one from the back of the holster.  What does it look like behind the body, and behind the belt, what shape is it?  Is it Symmetrical?

Also, how do you design a holster with a flap like this, I figure that I center the flap on the back side of the holster (not the exact center of the entire pouch, just the center of the back part that is against you while it is being worn).  How much leather do you estimate is taken up by being folded over the belt?  I am looking to make the gun ride fairly high on the belt, as in not have the cylinder fall below the center line of the belt.

The other question is about the throat.  I am also trying to make a throat that is straight across the top, once again like the Tejano holster of Mr. Burrows.  What does the transition look like between the belt loop part, and the pouch.  It is a sharp angle, should it have a bit of a dip?

I know that this is a tall order for a single post, but I have lots of questions.  Any pictures would be of great help.   Thank you so much in advance.

I went in search of the holsters you mentioned to see what you are talking about. You know a picture is worth ... I went to Chuck's site and could not find the holster named Tejano since most are in the format Holster #1.  So off to Will's site and the only holster that came close to Yuma was his Hand of God Holster from the latest "3:10 to Yuma".  If you click on his pattern for that holster he takes you through the steps for making it with many excellent photos so you can see what he is talking about.  Is this the holster you are referring to?

I don't know who made this holster, if the maker is here please come forward, but it sounds a little like the one your looking for.  Maybe....

What you are describing may be the Adobe holster on Will's site.  It has a "dogbone" style skirt.

That is similar, but here are the links to the holsters I am refering to.

Chuck Burrows holster, top left thumbnail with the two holsters, the holster on the right is almost exactily what I am looking for.

And WIll Ghromley, Yuma holster, on the left side, about 3/4 of the way down, distressed brown.

Here's a basic dog bone holster with a view of the skirt... Skeet

Skeeter, that is the exact idea I am looking for, thanks.  That is an awsome holster by the way.  Did you design it from scratch?  A few more pictures like that and I think thtat I could pull this off. The next part that I am going to have a bit of trouble with is the mouth of the holster.  I like the look of the straight cut, but I am having problems designing the transition from the holster to the skirt.

Skeeter Lewis

Thanks. Yes, it's my own pattern, based (of course) on originals in Packing Iron. I'll see if I can post some more pics...

Pretty poor image but I hope it helps.... Skeet
(It's designed for 8/9 0z. leather)

This may be (a bit) sharper....
Not sure if I got exactly above it, so there may be distortion.

mtgelaude

That is perfect.  The picture of the pattern helps in itself.  It shows that my pattern that I was altering is going in a correct direction.  Thanks Skeeter.

Skeeter, BTW did you get my PM I sent you.  I do not know how to tell if the message was sent or not.  Just trying to conferm, thanks.

Skeeter Lewis

Yes, I got your message and the pattern will be on its way today or tomorrow.

Bob, I hope that mine turns out half as nice as that.  I love the rosette, I am trying to design one right now, and that is just great.  Great Holster.

BTW, I was given the pattern, thanks again skeeter, and it looks great.  I can hardly wait to get some leather to make it.  My belt is done, all I need is a holster.  I am going to have alter it for a S&W, but i am going to make one for my Colt SAA as a test.
