I beg to report that the effects of Hurricane Lee have been impacting heavily on the east coast.

GAF member Bottom Dealin' Mike reports Harrisburg, PA has been hammered, with something like 19 inches of rain in a 24 hour period - and still coming down.

I don't know what amount we've gotten but two nearby streams that a small child could easily jump over or an adult could step in and just get his ankles wet a week ago are now raging rivers, complete with rapids.  One is just below my house and it has probably risen a good 8-10 feet, perhaps more.  It has flooded the road behind my house and formed a small pond in the low ground next to it.

Roads are flooded to the point that my wife doesn't even know if she can get home.   The ironic thing is that we're not nearly as bad as it is elsewhere in PA, MD and southern VA.

And the rain is still pouring!

I'll take our itty-bitty earthquake any day.

My son was a Bos'ns Mate on 1187, USS Tuskaloosa.

Neither one of them would help a lot right now, but a Higgins could...maybe.

Worst thing is his neighbor is building a large wooden boat and the animils are lining up in pairs.

Sir, if you are a John Prine fan these may help:

I got kicked off Noah's Ark
I turn my cheek to unkind remarks
There was two of everything
But one of me
And when the rains came tumbling down
I held my breath and I stood my ground
And I watched that ship go sailing
Out to sea.

I was living on the back bay of Biloxi when Katrina came. My house was 100 yards from the water and 25 feet above sea level. The water was eight feet high in my house. The water came very fast. Lost every thing I owned in a matter of one hour. When the tide went out (after four hours) so did every thing else. My insurance company Allstate did not pay one red cent for my lost. I had lots of hurricane insurance but no flood insurance.

I had car insurance through allstate right when I got out of the military,.....it was real high,...they told me it was because I hadn't had insurance for a while, they said it would go down,......it actually went up,.....and the agent started wearing those fancy Italian suits,.....I went in and dropped them face to face,...and offered a lot of advertising,....he then had the BA!!s to send me a bill for the balance of the year and a notice I was being sent to collections,.....so I got a hold of the head office and conveyed all this to them,......there was a check for what I had paid for the first part of the year at my door in two days and a written apology.......still WILL NOT GO BACK,.....this was 1994/95.....

We are in the process of buying a house in the Outer Banks (NC) and I was mildly surprised to discover that hurricane insurance does not cover flooding.  I would have thought that hurricane insurance would cover damage by WIND and WATER, but such is not the case.  Most folks where I live do not have flood insurance as its not a particularly big threat - except when some errant hurricane blows through, which it does about every 10 years or so.

S. Quentin Quale, Esq.

I don't know of any "homeowners" policy that covers flood damage.  Water damage is covered if it is caused by "blow in" or broken windows or breaches of the house integrity by trees, blowing debris, etc.

It's important that folks READ THEIR INSURANCE POLICY!!!!!!!!!

I know that reading an insurance policy is better than Ambien to induce sleep, but you've got to do it anyway!  That's the ONLY way to KNOW what you have bought.  There's an old insurance adage that says, "The Big Print Giveth and the Small Print Taketh Away."  Print sizes are not an issue anymore, but the truth of the saying remains.  The "grant of coverage" says what is covered and the "exclusions" say what isn't.  The "terms and conditions" set out the duties of policy holder in the event of a loss.  All are important.  Read them all!!!

My farm policy is sitting on my desk.  It just renewed.  It's just under 1/2' thick.  I've gotten through the first three pages.  It will take me a couple of days to do the rest.   :(

If you live in a flood plane consider flood insurance.  It's called a "flood plane" for a reason!!!!  Ditto for somebody who lives on the beach.  If you want to "go bare" then take the equivalent of the premium and put it into a savings account of some sort.  Now you're "self insured" but have a "reserve" to take care of any damage you might suffer in  a flood.  It's not a bad idea to do this for the deductables on any other insurance you might have (auto, homeowners, etc.).

The Senior V.P. for Claims at one company I worked for had previously worked for Allstate as an adjuster.  His comment was twist on their advertising slogan:  "You're in good hands with Allstate; but have an accident...OOPS!"   ;)

Everybody hates insurance companies.  Nobody sees it as a sin to steal from an insurance company.  During my 11 years as a claims attorney and supervisor I saw attempts at fraud on almost a daily basis.  It's part of the business.  That means that, on an almost daily basis, you anger a policy holder or claimant.  That's also part of the business.  I was sued, personally, half a dozen times for coverage decisions I made.  My employer defended me and my decisions were ratified in each case.  But there still at least six people that are really mad at me.   :o

Not all insurance carriers are honest.  Not all honor the terms and conditions of their policy.  There are means to deal with this (suit, complaints to state insurance commisioners, etc.).  Some are quick to drop an insured with a claim (like my former boss said Allstate was).  Buying insurance means you use the caveat emptor principle as you would in buying anything else.  If you buy on price alone you're likely riding for a fall.  That cheap premium almost always means "cheap coverage" which includes "cheap policy service."

Wise folks do what they can to protect themselves.  The less wise don't.  Decide what category you want to be in and then act accordingly.   :)
