I would love to see an all primitive weapons cowboy match with cap and ball pistols, revolving cap and ball carbines and a muzzle loading double shotgun, no cartridges allowed.   All stages written with only two shots maximum from the shotgun and either a preloaded second cylinder or a pair of carbines allowed but no reloading cylinders full or even individual rounds on the clock.  It would be hard to pull in enough shooters with the right gear for this one BUT I'll bet it would be a blast (literally).

Which one of you guys would show up with a revolving Colt rifle?

rickk

In lieu of a colt revolving rifle, can I substitute one of my cannons?

One shot would clear the entire range.  ;)

I could probably borrow my Pa's Remington revolving carbine...& I even have 3 additional cylinders for it at my house.
But, alas, it's not a Colt revolving carbine.

maybe even add or substitue breechloading percusion single shot rifles like the early sharps.  Sounds like fun.

Slowhand, The type of shoot yer talking about would be ok, allright, and fun. I do alot of similar type shooting at my favorite range along a river running through a wooded pasture type setting. I usually take top prize, mostly due to the fact I'm the only participate most of the time. Most of the pards I used to shoot black with gave up on it and one moved away. Sigh!!!! If you get such a shoot up and running, I'm courious what part of the USA are you in. I'm in I-O-Way! Sorry no revolving carbine here! Have Dragoons, could travel!!!!

Sounds similar to the North-South Skirmish Association.  You'd have to put on your blue or gray, but they've got the muskets, cap and ball revolvers, and cannons!

When health and circumstance permit, my favorite persona for SASS has been that of a Confederate CW deserter who runs west to hide and make his fortune by hook or crook and ends up as somewhat a Comanchero.   I usually use a Henry, a mule eared double and a pair of  '58s, they speed up my turn at the tables, but in the woods I prefer my Colt style revolvers.  I have wanted a percussion double and a revolving carbine or two for years but realize that they would not get used enough to cut into my meager shooting budget, but then.  I am fortunate enough to shoot with a great group of SASSers here in the Charleston area and they have always let me shoot anything I want as long as I do not take excessive time or want a competitive score.  I drool every time I go over to Dixies web site and look at thet '55 Root full length rifle.  When I hit thet billion dollar lottery I will get me one custom built in the BIG bore size!

Border Ruffian, what side match?  My dream match would be about them Walkers and Dragoons as THE primary match guns!  If we was a living afore the CW happened we would need the guns that was around in that time frame!  When you get right down to it one could always shoot at rifle targets with a pistol or better yet just dawnt even name the targets as such.  You git to load up the same number of shots to equal available targets and thats that.

rickk

Slowhand Bob, you just spewed out an interesting idea...

X number of targets, load X number of rounds into whatever you want, and you figure out the best choice of guns for the scenario.

All the targets would have to be made safe for any type of gun, but they would not necessarily have to be appropriate for any type of gun. Part of the strategy would be your pick of what to use on what.

We just had a 'cap & ball ONLY' match, most of us shooting BP in our long guns as well. Next year 100% BP will be required.
One stage started with a shot from one of my P-H Musketoons and the shooters really enjoyed it. We're going to include it in future matches.

I've got a Shiloh '63 MR and carbine (both .50s) and a .54 Gallagher. I'd love a match where MLs and breechloading cap lock rifles were included.
How much more "Cowboy" does it get? Compare it to "pop, pop, ding, ding" events with loads that would have embarrassed any real westerner.

Time for the revolution and reinvention of the sport!
