Also - nice use of the bar grounder. It's a little devil to get the hang of....

Interesting carving style and I will second a great job with the bargrounder.  Really nice product.  I did notice that you didn't use a Thumbprint or Pear Shader.

That was noticed on leatherworker.net too, Blackey. Its not that I did not want too, but I built it off of the Packing Iron cover, which does not show much shader work.
The part under my top strap has the pear work done on the leaves, but its covered in the pic.

The bargrounder usually gives me fits. I need to drill out the holes a little and work it over some to get a better impression than what it gives now.

Thanks for the nice comments, folks.

I just saw this and I must say great work. I recognized the resemblance to the on on the cover of the book. I have thought about making on like it also. I have always liked the border stamp on that Meanea holster but I don't know if you can find one like that. Have you ever seen one?
God is fluxing me which is good but it is not fun.

Dalton Masterson

I dont have the book in front of me, but is it a small fleur de lis? I have not seen one of that style if it is.
Wish I could find one.

Could you tell me about the buffalo belt? Is it the soft buffalo hide? I assume vegtan billets and loops? I have a large buff hide that I mainly bought for bags, a money belt never crossed my mind.

Dalton Masterson

The buffalo belt I made and it was my first money belt. I bought a few buff sides from the Leather Guy at a show, with the intent to make some chaps and bags. So far, I have made a money belt, which is rather comfortable, but kind of stretchy. The edges wont finish, and I built the veg tan parts upside down. I antiqued it in walnut or coffee when I first built it a few years back. I am planning on building another money belt sometime, but I dont know that I will use the buff. It was a pain to sew, what with the stretchiness of it.

SB,
The 1849 I have is a year 2000 made Uberti, but marked with the 2 line "Address SamL Cotl - Ney Work City" on top of the barrel and "COTLS Patent" on the left of the frame. I havent shot it yet, but did finally get some 00 buck last weekend to try. I got it in exchange for a 1911 rig for a fellow, and he won it as a door prize somewhere. I can't tell you muc more than that.

Dalton ,

Your workmanship is outstanding!  Here is my lesser grade carving, but with a border tool I made by grinding the bottom two leaves off of a five leaf Craftool.  It is an "F 991".  I think it is larger than the original, which I am guessing was rolled, but it still makes a nice border.

Nice work!

Looks pretty good Panhead! I dont see anything wrong with your carving.

Dalton, if you did not discard the floral pattern would you mind posting a flat image of it?  It would save a lot of work trying to alter the photo image and I am not a very good artist anyway.  I am thinking my barls are just a bit longer than yours and will need to be altered a bit there anyhows so sizing will not matter.   Your gun looked lust like the ones in PACKING IRON to me, the ones that were in the Californio rig that had the silver nose caps.  I love the way the little guns feel in hand but have not fired mine yet.  The local honcho has given me special permission to shoot them anytime I want at the monthly matches so I do need to make some leather for them.

I love those little stamps the old-timers used around the edge. Fleur-de-lys or whatever...So hard to find equivalents nowadays...

Dalton Masterson

Yeah, the only Fleur-de-lis stamp I have or have seen is the Tandy NatureTand type stamp, that just impresses the image into the leather.
That or they are waay too big for a border.
