Smoking on the firing line.

It's just pretty obvious Lumpy that either you aren't fully reading my replies or you just don't understand them.  I, in no way said or implied, that a person shouldn't be allowed to shoot at a match or any where on the range except while shooting or timing.  From that you tried to put me on an anti-smoking campaign. ::)

And just why do you think my "focus" is NOT on the shooter. :o
When I had to, I had no issue with dropping the timer and cigar to help a shooter having issues that need that level of help. It's NOT my first day ;)
This is turning into an anti-smoking issue and has not-one-dang-thing to do with shooting.
Cheers,
LG

Lumpy G, I smoke cigars. I'm not ashamed of it. But the people I shoot around do not know it. If someone is smoking within 2 or 3 feet of me I know it and it is a distraction.  :-* WM

It can be so. ;)
I always ask my posse if they have any issues with me lighting up.
In the years I have done this game, no one has ever said they did.
With all our BP in the air(we are sometimes and all BP posse). A good cigar takes the sulphur taste out of my mouth. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it ;D

NCOWS does not allow smoking on the firing line. Reason so many shoot black powder. Is there a SASS rule or how is it handled in SASS when you have cap and ball black powder shooters? Tj  ???
Back to the OP. First, I have never seen anyone try to load BP on or anywhere near the firing line. Most either do it at the unloading table, thier gun cart, or another designated table. Second, most smokers know that thier cig/cigar can be offensive to some and try to stay far enough away so as not to offend. I see this as a none issue. I shoot nothing but real BP (Schentzen), the sweet smelling stuff ;D, but find APP to be as offensive and choking as sheet rock dust :o. Please wait till the wind is blowing down range before igniting that stinkin stuff :D :P ;)

The never ending battle of smoker V Non-smoker... I find it funny how many nonsmokers go jogging...... in the city..... full of exhaust fumes and smog..... yet complain about the smoke from a cigarette or cigar.
I also find it funny when a smoker complains about some other smell, sweaty feet, the return of last nights rum and burritos etc.

Interestingly during rush hour last time I was in the city I was at the lights and a guy on a pushbike pulled up between me and a big truck and complained about me smoking in my van with the window down while he was riding his bike beside me... I had to laugh cause I had been behind another truck and had one on the outside of me and this guy had been sucking diesel smoke yet complained about a cigarette.

Anyway, who's shooting this coming weekend? Let's all just go have some fun and shoot some steel.

Tjackstephens

I never wanted this to be a battle between smokers and non-smokers. My post was to find out how the issue of smoking on the firing line was handled around cap and ball revolver shooters. Thanks for some very good imput on that subject. Tj

Howdy Again

As I said in my earlier post, the incident where I witnessed a cigar smoker show up next to somebody charging his C&B revolvers from a flask at the loading table happened quite a few years ago. As I said, I believe the cigar smoker just was not aware that somebody was loading with BP when he walked up to the table. He backed away immediately when I barked at him. I barked because something needed to be said right then. No feelings were hurt.

That is the only incident I have observed. Since that time it has become the accepted norm in these parts that C&B shooters charge their pistols with powder and ball at their carts, myself included on the rare occasion that I shoot C&B.

Smoking materials and Black Powder at the loading table is pretty much a non issue these days, at least in these parts.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Geez, I started out looking for some long range BP info & now look where I am!
I have the answer to the "smoke 'em if ya got em" hot potato.
I occaisonally have a small colt cigar in my hand while ROing & I guarantee you the shooter has 100% of my attention. How is this possible? I put the mini- stogie on pause  :o     If I ever need both hands, I'll drop it.
I'm pretty sure this is what Ol Lumpy Grits is doing as well. Likely all RO/smokers do this. While the shooter is engaging targets, the smoke sits idly betwixt the fingers, behind the back.

Look good & hit all the targets. Someone went to some trouble to put them there.

Ima Sure Shot

What about the C&B shooters that have  loaded somewhere else and are walking around with black powder in chambers, no caps on the cones and people are smoking around them?  They do not put caps on until at the loading table.  It is possible, an ash could drop onto the cone and set it off. I have wondered about this?Celeste

Lumpy Grits

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it  ;)
You have a better chance at hitting the Lotto........

Then agin they do announce and show pictures of lotto winners all the time.  ;D Though I must admit, so far it has not been me.  I know the chance is extremely small, but there is still the chance.

Lumpy Grits

In the "real-world" you have a better chance of being hit buy Lightening :o
OR, being in a fatal car crash on your way to the shoot  ;)
It's really not an issue....

If ya ever shot at BP shoots the rule is NO SMOKING AROUND ANY OPEN CONTAINERS OF BP OF ANY KIND. PERIOD. Opinions about smoking do not enter into it at any time. It is not an issue, and it is not debateable. It has nothing to do with whether it is polite, rude or just inconsiderate. IT IS NOT ALLOWED.  ;) WM

Good to know ;) I can/do understand the "WHY".
I shoot BPCR and SASS. There is no such rule, to date, that I know of. I hope there never is  ;)
FWIW: I have handled/hauled all catagories of Class 1 explosives in my 20+ yrs as a truck driver. I DO UNDERSTAND things that go BANG.
The biggest concern/FEAR is static. Then open flame source and STUPID drivers.  :o
BTW, the gasoline in your cars gas tank has 20 times the explosive force than BP.

In CAS I shoot BP, most of the time cartridge. However I used to shoot almost strictly muzzleloaders. I have seen a few, very few, people who would smoke while muzzleloading. I made it a practice to not shoot close to them or with them again. WM

Makes you wonder how come there still alive  ;)
