My first duty pistol  was a model 28 S&W, 357 mag with about a 4 5/8" barrel.  No speed loaders, they hadn't been invented yet, I don't think.  Carried twelve extra rounds in a slip on bullet holder on the right front of my sam brown.

Don't remember the model, but mine was also a S&W .38 Special with about a 4 5/8" bbl. Carried 6 extra rounds on the belt; I too was awaiting the invention of the speed loader. ;D

After a couple of years keeping it cleaned and oiled, I had it nickle plated.

If I remember correctly, we couldn't carry a .357. ???

WD,

This is a great post.......it sure takes me back some years. My first duty gun was also a Smith & Wesson "N" frame, Model 28,  Highway Patrolman. Again, this was in the days "Pre-speed loader", so I carried my extra 12 rounds in 6 round Bianchi speed strips. We were issued full house .357 magnum rounds back then and they were screamers!!!!!!

Talk about a "Big iron"......that gun was sure a major piece of steel. This was when the smaller, "K" frame, Model 19's were coming out and everyone had to have one of those. I stuck with my Highway Patrolman until we were allowed to switch to the higher capacity semi-auto handguns for duty use....

My first duty weapon was a Colt "Trooper", .357, target grips & hammer (big hands).  Purchased new long ago for the steep price of $50.00! Sorry to say the guy offered me a "Python" for $75.00 but I could not afford it. :o

Still have that weapon in my gun case! ;D

My first duty weapon was a blue Model 19 Smith with a 12 round loop on my belt. By the time the speed loaders came around I was carrying a Model 39 nickel plated 9mm.

When I joined our local Sheriff's Office we were issued S&W model 65 .357 cal.  I had a 2 1/2" model 66 for an off duty gun.  I went to work for a city department where I was issued a S&W model 64 in .38 spl.  Couldn't carry my 66 off duty, loaded with .38's. as .357 magnums weren't authorized. ???

My first and only duty gun was a S&W 19 just .38's, we did get speed loaders and that was the gun turned in when I retired. :'(  Loved that gun, wish I had it today. :'(

Started with a S&W Model 10. Nickel plated, with a 4" bull barrel.
Carried that until I could afford a Model 19. That Model 19 was the best gun ever. I've kicked myself many times for getting rid of it. Had a model 64, 66, 686, Glock 17, and Glock 21(current) but the old Smith 19 was a tack driver fer shure.

My first duty pistol was a Colt Pythom (.357). We had to supply our own firearms. I loved that pistol, gave it to my wife when I could switch to an auto-loader. That was a Colt Combat Commander. Now that I'm retired, I carry a Colt Combat Commander.

Another proud packer of the S&W Highway Patrolman 4".  I had a neon green insert added to the front sight and put Mustang rubber grips on it.  Good gun.  WIsh I still had it.

Sergeant Smokepole

Started with a Ruger Security Six. Moved to a S&W Model 639 and then to a S&W 4516

First duty pistol was a S&W Model 10 in .38 Special - "Gawd, but that seems to be ages ago.......!"

:-X

When we got to buy our own, I got the Barretta 92 in 9 mm - first thing I ever shot with it was an oaken log in a fireplace box......got a call on a "Rabid Raccoon" and well, there it was......!  (Second shot did get the 'coon!  I was young and alittle scared!)

Having spent some time in the MP's - naturally, my first duty pistol was an M1911A1 and my second an M9.

Both fit my hand well and both did the job asked of them.

model 10 with a 4 inch Bull barrel, it was a fine shooter, then a model 92 which I hated but they were DOC issue and that was what we had to live with.
