Wooliy Holsters?

I haven't been doing this for all that long, but it seems like I've the corner on unusual requests. I have a woman shooter who wants a set of holsters covered in wool. She wants them to look like wooliy chaps. She also wants her belt covered in hair on cow hide. She says she saw a pair of wooly holsters in a movie once.

I assume the way to do this would be to build some holsters like see wants, then glue some wool on. Any thoughts, ideas, advice?

Thanks, JD

Woolies (hair covered chaps) were hide tanned with the hair on. The most common hide was Angora Goat but buffalo, horse and bear were also used. I've seen some old ones where the hide was thin and it was secured to a heavier canvas as a backing.
Good luck, sounds like an interesting project.

Thanks Durango, I appreciate the info. This guys is currently using holsters she made, and she made a pretty nice pair of chaps from a hiar on piece she bought at Tandy.

I think I'm going to tell her that she needs to find the material, then I will be glad to help her. She and her long time significant other are good people and regular shooters at our club.

Thanks again

Jd,

Try a "hair on" insert on the belt and holster

After talking to KT I've learned that we will need some Angora goat "sikn". Evidently that's how the Angora people market it: skin, not hide, at least the ones I've looked at. It seems like spendy stuff to me, so I'm going to let her get the raw material before proceeding.

Make sure she gets the tanned hair on and not just some hair on skins.

JD, I'm in the process of making a "Hair on Hide" gun rig right now.  I should have the belt done by Friday, so I'll post some pics then.  Havn't figured out how I am going to do the holsters yet but I have some ideas.  I won't be using "Wooly Hide though.
