Did they use Cart Buckles on gun belts years ago?
I really like the looks of these and pondering using them on gun belts. Just curious if this was period correct or not. Not that it matters.  ;)

Swinging a rope is alot of fun unless, your neck is in the loop.

A 'Cart' buckle is a large oval buckle - you see them in the Tandy catalog.

The square, clipped-corner style of buckle is more commonly seen on period leather.

Look at Rattenbury's 'Packing Iron' for reference.

I am not very eddycated on the history of leather but do think the cart buckles look to be more comfortable for wear than the popular clip corner style.  We fattys get buckle fatigue from most of the large buckle designs!  As a side note, Tandy sells what they call a rein-actors round buckle, think mountain man, and it looks to be similar to the cart buckle design.

WOW TW, you need to hold class on how to age buckles my friend!

TW beautiful job on the buckle. I think I have seen that rig before. KT ;)

Historically cartridge belts particularly in the later part of the 19th century were wide and the buckle would not contact a persons belly. I seldom make a belt much less than 3 inches wide and tend to make money belts closer to 3 1/2. Most billeted belts were money belts.

Thanks for the flowers Duke, Bob, and Marshal Will, it was a project making that Cart Buckle look its part, but I was very satisfied with how it came out, I appreciate you comments.

Ten Wolves the buck did turn out darn nice.  I have always heard that it gets easier and better with practice.  I would be willing to send a few of them too you so you could work on the technique.  ;D

I've seen the odd example of 'half-frame' cart buckles. Have a look at page 143 of Packing Iron.
