Thanks for the info on the rifle. I really didn't expect to win the bid. I don't have too many old military rifles in my arsenal. I would encourage folks here at Cascity to give me input on the rifle. I should receive it in a week or so. My next project is aquiring xome ammo. I my try to find some at the TSRA gun show at Mesquite this weekend.

" U.S. Rifle, 7.62 mm, Model of 1916: Due to the desperate shortage of arms and the shortcomings of a still-developing domestic industry, the Russian government ordered 1.5 million M1891 infantry rifles from Remington Arms and another 1.8 million from New England Westinghouse in the United States. Some of these rifles were not delivered before the outbreak of the October Revolution and the subsequent signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk which ended hostilities between the Central Powers and Russia. When the Bolsheviks took over the Russian government, they defaulted on the Imperial Russian contracts with the American arsenals, with the result that New England Westinghouse and Remington were stuck with hundreds of thousands of Mosin-Nagants. The US government bought up the remaining stocks, saving Remington and Westinghouse from bankruptcy. The rifles in Great Britain armed the US and British expeditionary forces sent to North Russia in 1918 and 1919. The rifles still in the US ended up being primarily used as training firearms for the US Army. Some were used to equip US National Guard, SATC and ROTC units. Designated "U.S. Rifle, 7.62mm, Model of 1916", these are among the most obscure U.S. service arms. In 1917, 50,000 of these rifles were sent via Vladivostok to equip the Czechoslovak Legions in Siberia to aid in their attempt to secure passage to France.

During the interwar period, the rifles which had been taken over by the US military were sold to private citizens in the United States by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, the predecessor agency to the current Civilian Marksmanship Program. They were sold for the sum of $7.00 each"

The Mosin has been used by a number of different countries and seen service from the over throw of the Czar to the current time.  There are a number of web sites that are on the Mosin, but I would recommend starting with:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosin%E2%80%93Nagant

The cartridge is the 7.62 x 54R (or 53R depending on the reference).  Shoots a 150 gr. jacketed bullet abou 2800 fps, which makes it about equivalent to the .30-06.  Not sure who has brass, but probably Bertraim or Norma.  Main problem may be the groove diameter of the barrel.  May run anywhere from .308 or .311 or larger.  Best slug the barrel.  The rifles (in various mods) and ammo were used by the Finns, Chinese, and other Russian-related countries.  I probably should remove the lamp socket from mine, recrown the muzzle and shoot it.  :P
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

If it's in good condition and un-bubba'd, you go a good deal. If it's a hex receiver ione, not converted o Mod 91-30, you go a really good deal. Most obvious sign of 91-30 is he hooded front sight. The earlier model, full length, hex receiver ones are suitable for GAF matches.

The carbine ones are fun, too. Make a great fireball when you shoot at dusk with regular surplus ammo.

When you go to the gunshow, look for some Privi Partisan ammo, it's reloadable and usually a decent price. The surplus stuff will not be reloadable, and will probably be corrosive, so clean accordingly.

Man, I have sold a bunch of them lately.   ;D
Ammo is easy to get and it is a fun little rifle to shoot.

The GAF site won't open for me (here).
Could someone tell me if it can be used in the GAF Postal Matches?   ???
I think I recollect that it was dis-allowed like the Mausers were.

The Mosin 91 is allowed as are several models of the Mauser. The 91-30 is not.

If you got an M91 for that price, that was darn good, assuming its all there.

A 91/30 is right in that ball park price, and is essentially an M91 that was upgraded in 1930 with a shortened barrel, and different sights. The sight guard ring on the front sight is the easiest clue. I dont think the 91/30 is GAF legal if I remember right. The M91 is.

The best web site I have found for info on these is http://7.62x54r.net/. Good info on that site.

The last M91 I bought was 200, had been to Austria in the Great War, and ended up in Finland sometime after that. I thought I got a great deal on it at 200.

The 91-30 is allowed, IF it has the Hex reciever, thus making it indistinguishable (But for the front sight) from a 91 Dragoon or Cossack model.

Ahhhh, good to know on that. Thanks!
There are a lot of the hex ones out there for a good price too! Opens up a lot of options for GAF matches.

Agreed!  I did not buy a 91/30 a few weeks ago because I thought (duh) it was not allowed.  Will be picking one up in a couple weeks.

Grizzly Adams

A pard had one of these out at the range last week, and asked me if I wanted to try it.  Wow!  What a great shooting rifle!  I could hit the 380 yard target pretty regular with it - open sights and old eyes to boot. ;D
