For what we do, you only need one belt, one holster and one pouch.
Drydock, you miss less than I do!  My cartridge belt only holds forty rounds.  If we have twenty-five to thirty rifle targets per stage, I may run dry!

You guys that have Coon Creeks cartridge belts,,what do ya think of the quality of them ? He seems pretty dang reasonable on his prices.

Have a Mills Belt, one holster and one cartridge box, those seem to all be good quality.

Tan Leggins, on the other hand.....somewhat on the "flimsy" side.

Nice!  But wouldn't a second belt get in the way and become cumbersome?
Not really. It's the route I take.

Mckeevers are a bit of a PITA, but they do look nice. They're made to fit an 1 3/4" belt, but I I think you could get them on a 2" belt.

Hagner's are also a period correct possibility as well as the above mentioned Dyer.

like the idea of carrying 40-60 rounds.  I'd rather not stretch the cartridge loops so as to keept them sized for .45 Long Colt.   Since there are only 24 cartridge loops and not 50, there is a bit of room on the right side of the belt.

OKAY, I think I've decided on a Dyer pouch for 30 rounds from that Coon Creek Western.  They said they can modify either the McKeever or Dyer either one.

How far out from the belt does the Dyer extend?  Is it cumbersome?  It's width across the belt is 7 inches which is plenty on my right side

SGT John Chapman

You'll like it,...they are no more cumbersome than any other,......but less than most.....

OK, my Dryer pouch just came in.  Is this what it's supposed to look like on the inside?  Not what I was expecting ???  I though it was supposed to have compartments to hold the shells.  This looks like something to just dump shells into flopping around.   Is there a method to this?

Doug,

Yes it is just as it says a pouch, the Mckever Box is what you want if you want cartridge loops.  The Mcvkever holds 20 the Dyer pouch holds thirty or more, I use mine for shotgun and it will hold about 10 to 12.

The Dyer should be lined with thick fleece.  That is not!
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Okay, I have about 15 shells and stuffed them down into the bottom of the pouch nose first.  I can see how this works now, it pinches shells at the bottom of the pouch and supports them together.

I ordered it from Coon Creek.  They had to modify and enlarge already done straps on the back to accomodate my 2 3/4 belt.  There is thick fleece on the front part of the pouch but not the back, I wonder if it has anything to do with the modification.

IIRC, my 1874 Dyer pouch replicas (made to Gov't specs) hold 23 rounds of .45-70 (usually use mine for 6-8 12 ga. shotshells, so I haven't filled it with .45-70's for awhile. For your purposes a Hazen-style might work.  I haven't made any regulation style double-row ones, but it wouldn't be hard to do.  The way the original pouches, belt slides, etc., were made to accomodate the wider prairie belts or regulation waist belts was to cut the belt loops and punch a hole through each of the cut ends.  A leather thong was then laced through each hole and tied or just knotted at each end to enlarge the size of the resulting new loop.

The Dyer pouch is supposed to have sheep's wool on the inside of both front and rear pieces. The sheep's wool will hold the rounds vertical for the most part.

Hmm...I like the pouch the more I handle it and it fits ok on my belt as they sized resized the loops.  I WOULD like to have that wool on the back wall of the pouch if it will help stablize the cartridges.  But I'd hate to mail it back for that...wonder if I could send for it and have it sewn in.

Consider this:  perhaps you could go to your nearest Tandy Leather (or order online) and get some sheepskin.  They also sell leather glue.  Quick fix, and it'd look a lot more like it should.  I can't remember the name of the leather glue I have, but it holds VERY well.

It's called Barge Cement, Tandy has it or Contact Cement will also work.

I bought a very nice Christian Fair Weather belt from Dixie Gun Works ( canvas loops on a leather belt w/eagle plate extra ) I don't remember how many it held maybe 30. and strong side and a cross draw fit as well over the loops.
I don't have it any more  ::) ( remember the fire event ? ) but I'd by another if I still had the Springfield  :(

I use that belt from Dixie Gun Works for my .50-70, and it works very well!  The only problem I have is that the loops are pretty tight, so I really have to pull to get them out.  I use a double cylinder pouch for pistol ammunition, and that works quite well also.

Try a  dry Silicone spray on your rounds....they'll coat the inside of the loops and they slide right out
