Hi,

I am at the point of ordering a Pedersoli Silouette Model and then having it sent to Montana Vintage Arms to have Soule style front and rear sites installed.

My problem is who to deal with .... so far, Cherries in NC is the only one who says they will even special order it ....

I Have sent emails to Cherries, Taylors & Co. and then directly to Pedersoli without any sort of reply. Does anyone have any experience ordering Rolling Block Pedersolis?

Help!

Frisco County,

I saw that same page on the pedersoli website; however Cabelas, Taylors and Pedersoli itself does not answer emails ... I tried to call the Cabelas Gun Shop in Reno/Boomtown, but the guy said he had another call and promised to ring me back but he never did  .... I knnow cause I sat around mot of that afternoon waiting for his call.

So if this is the 'customer service' they show BEFORE they have gotten my money, what will it be like afterwards?

Wadd,

I would recomend EMF I have had nothing but great dealings with them.  If you wish I can check out what you are looking for personaly and give you a report.  But everything that I have received from them has been top notch.  Any problems were taken care of immedietly.

I would think any FFL could order a Pedersoli from a dealer.  Just make sure you are clear what you want when placing the order.  Let the FFL run interference for you.

Old Top,

Thanks for the recommndation for EMF ... but I think I will go with Deadeye Don's  ... the FFL I usually deal with is on vacation  .... I'll check with him when he returns ...

Plus I really want to buy an 'unadorned gun' with a pistol grip and twin triggers ... then have the rifle sent to Montana Arms and have their Soule site added ... something that would be more in the area of an FFL than a manufacturer ...

I have to wonder WHY you would go to all the expense and trouble of sending a rifle back/forth just to have some sights put on?  ???

A Tang Mounted rear is as easy as a Gunsmith's Screwdriver and 2 screws.

You'd want to check that it's level and sometimes that entails putting a narrow strip of thin brass shim stock material (from your local auto parts store) under one side.  But still that's easily done with a Spirit Level and some sort of cradle to hold the gun steady in.  Then a sharp pair of scissors is all else that's required.

Changing/installing a different Front Sight is almost as easy; again that cradle, a piece of cutoff matchbook cover as a pad, a brass drift punch and small hammer (oh and 3-5 min.) is all that's required.

The latest version of the MVA Front Sights are almost a push fit and they're locked in place by a small Allen set screw.

Grogan,

First, I would be ordering my rifle from a local (left coast) FFL, whom I would guess would be ordering it from the Right Coast (i.e. (i.e Cherries or Taylors), and would have to have it sent accross the country. Call me crazy or a dreamer, but I am thinking that the rifle could be shipped to Montana on the way and the sites installed there, complete with Factory Warranty.

Secondly, I have reached the era that I can accept that I am a good medic, a fair woodbutcher and an adequate leathermaker.
But gunsmith, alas no. Any time that the acceptable distances are measured in the thousandsth,
it becomes time to give it to someone who not only has the tools but knows the proceedure far better  I ...

If you order a gun through a dealer I'm pretty sure they are going to want it sent straight to them and then transfer it to you to do with as you wish after you own it.  I expect they will want to get the gun off their records as sold to avoid any questions from the BATF.  For the same reason I think the distributor/importer will want to send it directly to the FFL that ordered it.  Why not just buy it, buy the sights, and let a local gunsmith install them?  I would suggest calling Taylors & Co. and asking them if they would consider sending it to Montana if you want to go that route.  I have found them to be good people and quite helpfull. 540-722-2017 East coast time.

Hawkeye,

I have this GREAT FFL dealer... he is on vacation out of the country until the 5th or 6th and I will want to check with him before I say anything.

I wanted to ask my FFL how he thought about having the rifle sent through the dealer to Monana Vintage arms (Where the Tand site would be installed) ... if he says no, then I know for sure which way to go ... at any rate, since it its a sale from out of state I would  imagine that he will have to arrange the sale paperwork.

As far as Taylors .... although Pedersoli does list them as a distributor, they list none of the rolling blocks on their website ... and calling them might  work, but I am still waiting for a return email to my post ot them asking all these same questiongs ....

I would highly recommend Richard at Flintlocks etc.   He has some great deals, just give him a call.  When I bought my long range sharps, and it arrived in CA with a cracked fore stock due to UPS  :o I called him right from the FFL and he got on it immediately.  When I received the replacement (4 days total turnaround) from him it matched the stock as if it was from the same piece of wood.  His customer service is outstanding I know that I'll be a customer of his again

I don't think that MVA will install the sights on your rifle, even if you hand delivered the thing to them.
Best bet is to order the rifle, and the sights and then have someone local install the sights for you if you don't think you can simply use a screw driver to mount the soule and a hammer and punch to remove the front and install the new front.
Eat more beef the west wasn't won on a salad.

Good News!

Richard from Flint Etc actually answered me, and I have tenttively ordered an S.865 Silhouette rifle, and it looks like it will go directly to the FFL here in town ...

Next, after the rifle is paid for, will be some MVA sites  ...and as to whom installs them, well it will be a bridge that I will cross when I come to it ....

Addendum

The rifle is here at my local FFL and I have seen it ... I ordered the last silhouette from Flint Etc. The rifle comes with a hooded front site and open 'buffalo horn' sites in the rear.

But, having looked at the tang, it is already drilled for a Soule stylle rear site, so I am thinking I will probably put one of MVA's Long distance Soules myself.  Then when I get a bit ahead the MVA combo front hooded site and bubble level will probably be added.

Dunno; but that is the plans before I shoot it ... everything may change afterward ...

Old Top,

Thanks for the complement; I plan to put it under my Christmas tree in its finished form ...but first I still owe all the tax and FFL Fees on the gun, not to mention getting the two MVA sites installed ... as it sits now it is in two pieces (I understand that Pedersoli ships all its Remingtons wi the stock removed).

Skip...I'm very jellous, super rifle what Caliber did you say ?

Once upon a time there was Carbine or maybe baby rolling block in the family. I just remember, ammo was not available in the 60's, at least easly found any way.
I have vage memories of it , I was kid seems it was 38/55  :-\  but it could have been a .43 Spanish or Egyptian something.
when planets align...do the deal !

I bought one in .45/70 ... according to Mr Venturini (in the book, Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West) that seems to be the most available/cheapest and most easily reloaded of all the buffalo rounds ... of course, that is just one man's opinion, but I really trust his opinion ...

Waddy - That is not just one man's opinion, it is the opinion of a LOT of men. There may be other calibers that are more well suited to specific uses, but there is not another one with such a vast availability of components (from brass to bullets) and history behind it (50-70 might br close in the history). It's hard to beat the "Old Soldier" for an all-round cartridge.

Good looking rig ya ordered . . . you'll be able to get the tang sight installed no problem. The hardest part is getting them shimmed as necessary to make sure it is plumb from top to bottom.

Otter,

Shimmed?I thought this was a 'bolt-on-bolt-off' situation.

How do I measure and shim a rolling block?
