Thanks for the info, I'm thinking I would like to try my hand at making my own leather setup. Any DIY tutorials, etc. for making your own leathergoods?

I made this one up from scratch. Will be glad to share if it fits your needs pard.

I wont be able to send it until after the forth if you want it.

Bob, I have recently bragged on one of my favorite patterns to use as a starting point, the WG Black Canyon Rig.  Though I consider the holster pattern a bit large, Ruger sized, it makes an excellent launching point for a competitive holster.  A cut here and a bend there until you get just what you want from it.  You can do a pretty good job of making it fit the Colt size guns by using a very slightly heavier liner or by adding a second stitch row at the main seam.  This assumes that you do not wish to resize the overall pattern.

Good looking rig chuck, looks like lightening ready to strike!

Boothill,

I do many holsters like that.  I've attached different views of some of my "gamer" holsters.  Some like a gunfighter style belt with them and others prefer a ranger belt.  Also look at the Long Hunter rig on the Kirkpatrick Leather website.  Most CAS consider it as one of the top speed production rigs.

Mongo  nice holsters. Are they lined with anything or all leather.

Slowhand Bob

Good looking holsters and a close look reveals that they are lined and use a belt positioner.

TN Mongo

Wolf,

They are 8-9oz with a 6-7oz lining.  No aluminum in this pair; they are heavy enough to hold their shape without a metal ining.

Slowhand,

Thanks for the compliment.

You're my hero when it comes to competition holsters Mongo! I've seen those before and have tried my best to copy them. The only advantage I can see for metal in the shank is the ability to bend the holster out and away from the body if desired. I used metal in one set at my customer's request and it worked pretty well.

Bob, I agree that Will's Black Canyon holster is a good starting place, but I thought the holster was a little small! I think it just depends on how tight or lose you like the gun in the holster, a personal preference. I want lots of "wiggle room" to drop that puppin in there in a hurry.

BhB whatever you end up making will look sharp based on all of your other work. JD

JD,

Any pattern can be sized larger or smaller depending on what gun you a making the holster for.  If the holster is properly cased and molded for the gun...the gun should slip right in with no problem but also give enough tention to hold it in place.

outrider

JD,

Here are some photos of a "comp" rig the I did several years ago.  The holsters have a 3" drop and an 8 degree muzzle forward cant.  Although the holsters have hammer straps the fit was enough to keep them in place but still allow quick drawing.  If you want I can send you a pattern for this one

Thank you J.D..  I haven't taken pictures of the last several rigs that I've done - I'm not much of a photo bug.

Outrider,

That's a nice looking rig.  Professionally done, as always.

outrider

Mongo,

That's the one I did for Jeremiah Goodnews....I am not sure he is shooting at MDR anymore....

Tanx for all the replies.
When you metal line a holster you put the metal in the skirt and over the belt.
How deep in the pouch will the metal go? If I look on the LH-5 rig it seems to end at the
top of the cylinder, am I right or will it go deeper  ???

I go near the bottom of the backside of the pouch, above the bottom stitch line.  I've looked at this particular holster; I think it goes a little deeper than it appears in the picture.

Boothill,

If you use a metal lining, make your pattern a little bigger than normal.  When I wet fit a metal lined holster, the leather on the backside of the cylinder doesn't give at all and, of course, the metal takes up a little room.   Good luck with your project.

Slowhand Bob

Bob, using the photo you posted as a guide, I will tell you how I did it.  My liner was pretty much intended for the belt loop area only and did not wrap around the holster to the front.  I would end the liner at the front of the cylinder on the holster side and go up and over the belt loop with the skirt metal ending just below the loop rivets.  The rivets (chicago screws etc) would actually stake that end of the metal liner at loop and belt tensioner.   Im not sure there is one right way but do figure there are some wrong ways, but do not worry, you will recognize those when you try them!  :o

TN Mongo

Boothill,

Maybe I misunderstood your question.  My metal lining only goes down the holster skirt, then over where the belt would go, and then down only the backside of the holster pouch.  The part that goes down the backside of the holster pouch is only about 2"-2 1/2" wide.  I have no metal near the front of the holster pouch.  It is heavy enough to retain its shape without adding metal.  The metal down the skirt and back of the pouch is just there so the shooter can adjust the holster away from his body as much as he wants to.  The holster you included a picture of is similar in its metal lining.
