There is only one NCOWS posse in California and I noticed they shoot in 3 different areas of the national forest.  This got me to wondering, do they pack all those metal targets to the woods or do some clubs use other types of targets?  If other types, what types have you seen or know of that are used for NCOWS?

I don't know about the targets but do know that 20 to 25 yards is a bit long for a pistol shot. Especially with an 1873 or earlier type pistol. Now not a big deal with my 1911 and night sights but a bear with a 1873 replica that tends to shot a whole lot low to begin with.  ;D

That club would be the Hat Creek Regulators, my old posse that I started in '03, and yes they trailer all those heavy 'steel' targets a two hour drive to the top of Breckenridge Mountain. They use to shoot up there every month but now only hold a few shoots up on the mountain. As I understand it they now hold 4-5 shoots during the year at Tehachapi Sportsman Club shooting range. Only a handful participate though. Unfortunately I no longer shoot with them.

20 yd pistol shots? ....I recommend practicing at that distance, shooting at a target the size of a sheet of copy paper.
Then, you'll be ready for almost anything encountered at a NCOWS or even a SASS match, and have confidence in your shot.

I have several steel plate targets for practice...the largest is 11x14.

I carried a 1911 for years at work. I've carried one of several Colt's SAA longer.I can't tell that there's a nickel's worth of difference in accuracy. I can stand and using both hands put 5 out of 5 on target at 100 yards with a SAA given no time limit. I used to do the same with a 1911 but it's been years since I've shot one.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Joss House, glad to make your acquaintance.  Sorry to hear this about the Hat Creek Regulators.  I have been amazed that a state the size of California has so little participation in NCOWS.   It took some real dedication to haul all them targets up into the forest each gathering.
