I recently met someone with a pair of Pietta-made '58s with brass frames and 5 1/2" barrels. When I asked where they got them, I discovered Cabela's 'used' to carry them.

Well, I did a bit of hunting only to find that Pietta's got that model in their gallery, but I'm unaware of anyone who actually sells it.

Anyone know if that model is even being made, and if so, where I can find one?

You don't see to many with 5 1/2" barrels, but Sportsman's Warehouse has the brass frame Remingtons in stock frequently.  Pretty easy to shorten the barrel and rammer.

Sure would like to take you aside and explain  :-\

BUT Skip the BRASS Frame ...get your 58 in a steel frame .... you'll have a more harmonious outcome
5/12" if you like.

I'm quite sure others will Agree....trust us on this one  ;)

Marstar in Canada used to sell them. Good luck getting one shipped across the border.  :(

If they "used" to sell them, there is nothing to get shipped across the border. ;)

As far as shooting. the prior poster is correct that you are better off with a steel framed gun.  And, recently the price difference between the brass and steel models has narrowed considerably.  However, brass sure is pretty and the Remington being a solid frame gun will last a long time shooting BP.  If that's what you want, get them.

Marstar Canada still carries the 5 1/2 inch barrel NMA's.  .36, and .44 cal. Call'em Sherrif's models. They are Piettas.

No need to "explain" anything to me. I've already bought 2 pairs of steel-framed New Model Armies, and now I'd like a brass-framed set as well. I've been on this forum long enough (and understand physics enough) to know that steel is better than brass, but I've also read enough posts from people who actually own brass NMA's to decide I'd like to try them out.

Unfortunately, "Pretty easy to shorten the barrel and rammer." is pretty darn subjective. I don't have the skill or tools to do the job, and I imagine it would double the cost of the gun to get it done elsewhere.  :(

I've considered buying the brass-framed model AND another steel-framed 5 1/2" steel-framed model, and then switching the barrel and rammer, and then selling off the resultant 8" steel-framed gun, but that seems a bit wacky.  :P

Agreed Pettifogger, , that is exactly the same conclusion I came to. And since these would be show pieces, my steel guns would take most of the abuse.

I should have worded it: "Last time I checked, Marstar in Canada had them."

@Indian Outlaw - thanks for the input, but Marstar's only has the steel framed 5 1/2" model, same as everyone else. But, yeah, I'm in the States, so that doesn't help either way.

So is this a case of "they do them in batches, so just wait for the next batch" or are they gone for good? Has anyone had luck contacting Pietta directly? I don't speak Italian, and if their website is any indication, I don't think I'll get much help directly from them.

Actually the CEO at Pietta, one of the brothers , speaks fluent english with some accent.
I met him at Shot ...

I know Uberti has Susan Webb and I've spoken to her.
I would think Fil. Pietta has plenty of English speaking folks.

Good luck with your quest  :)

I know Alessandro.  Send him an email.  He or someone on his staff will usually answer if he is in the office and not shooting.  He will be at EOT in a couple of weeks, so he may already be packed and ready to go as he brings a fairly large display with him.  The problem with the brass frame 5 1/2" is that it is a very low production gun as there simply isn't that much market for it.  Even the 5 1/2" steel model normally costs more than the standard 8" simply because it is a special run and is another catalog number they have to keep track of.  Here's his email.
