My old Ranch Horse died. I had him free leased to a Lady who used him to teach her kids to ride. Scar was a fine working horse. I got him from a Cowboy who had a massive heart attack and couldn't keep a horse anymore. Scar was a finished horse when I got him. During his life he worked on ranches all over South Texas. I used him for search and rescue. We worked on the Thomas property running off trespassers. We worked on the R4 Ranch until it was sold off.  He was good with cows and steady enough that you could shoot a gun off of'm. When we both got a little old to Cowboy, Scar worked at 3 different schools teaching very little kids how to ride like a real Cowboy. He died at 28 years of age still teaching kids how to ride. It's a little depressing thinking about him passing but he had a good life with lots of adventure. I could tell stories about all day and not tell it all. I hope Scar lays  in peace. He earned his rest.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Shotgun, he is in a green meadow now kicking up his heels like a young colt again, never to get old again.
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Every cowboy has one GREAT horse.  Sounds like yours was Scar.  Mine was Black Jack: died of colic at 18.
"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it

I took delivery of a new mare yesterday, part of a Horse Trading deal for sure. Anyway rode about 2 1/2 miles in the high 90s. Alice did just fine. Barely broke a sweat and handled my weight well. She's a very small Draft, 16.1 and maybe 1400 lbs. It was the first time I've been on a horse in just over a year. The ride did me a lot of good.

I'd agree China Red was mine, I had to put her down at 28 years, she had gotten down (arthritis) and I could not get her up.
She had a good life and was my best friend... :'(  China was a Morgan.

Major
a Tenn.Walker tried hard to fill her horse shoes, he too was very good mount, both were gated horses.

He passed in 07 in freak accident, playing with and messing with my Daughters show horse they got a bit to frisky Major was kicked at the base of the skull ...he died of basal skull fracture.

Then there was Rienzi , I also lost her also in 07 at 28 she certainly deserves honorable mention, I had raised her from a Foal.
when planets align...do the deal !

Texas Lawdog

I got my first horse when I was 4. He was just a colt and I started riding him when he turned 2.  He lived to be 33 years old. He was part of our family, just like our dogs and cats. I lost him about a year after my Dad passed away.
