Capt'n Jack

Raven , any movement in correcting the problems in the conversion cylinders?  Thanks, Captn Jack
Capt'n Jack was my great great grandfather, a Captain of the Ky Cavalry in the Civil War.  He lived to a ripe old age.

Raven

We have figured out the problem and the solution ;D

I will be making an anouncement as soon as we get back from the NRA Show ;)

So, please hang tight for a couple of days

Just got off the phone with Jay...........

Here's the story:

The first couple of Remington Pocket Convertors that were sold all exhibited the same basic problem. They "skipped" past the locking notch upon firing. This happened more than just ocaisionally.

Jay tried boosting spring tension, mods to the bolt, and evrything else one could think of.

When he contacted me it was to "bang heads" and come up with a fix. Jay and I took the direction that a number of issues were contributing to the problem. The design by itself (of the 1863 Remington) is a big part of the issue, with the bolt being way off center and, I'm speculating, the weight of the cylinder as well as lack of mass in the small parts also contributing to the problem.

I have had quite a bit of experience and also figured that the undersized projectile and light load of the 32 S&W cartridge were contributing factors. This sets up issues in dwell time and I believe is allowing the primer to back out of the case for a micro second (then the case is picking it back up). I speculate that if we achieved obturation this might go away.

I then tried to load a larger bullet, heavier load which does correct the problem.

At the same time Jay loaded light loads of Black Powder in a percussion cylinder and the percussion version exhibited the same skipping problem.

Walt came out right before NRA and we loaded some 32/20 bullets (heavier) and some 85 gr bullets with heavier charges of Bullseye. This cured the skipping!

I am confident that heavier loads that do not exceed the recommended 1000 FPS recommendation in Kirsts paperwork will make this a useable conversion. Of course you will not be able to purchase factory ammo that will work so it will be a handload only proposition. As a note; 32 Auto loads are under 1000 fps and I was substituting the load data into 32S&W cases.

Black Powder 32 S&W at a maximum charge will still be less by volume than the percussion cylinder held and since the conversion cylinder is 4140 they should pose no issues.

Bernie Rowles at Old West Bullet Moulds also tells me that he has a mould design for a heeled bullet in the 32 S&W case and this might just make for a more accurate load with less chance of keyholeing.

For all you reloaders the 63 Pocket Konverters are back! ;D
We are talking with several cartridge manufacturers about loading .32 S&W to .32 ACP specs. for you non reloaders.

I have 63 Konverters available for $245 at 254-248-0663

They will also be back on the Web Site and at VTI soon.

Thanks for this update, Raven.  I have been interested in converting my Pocket Pistol, but aside from pictures in some ads in the Chronicle and elsewhere, I haven't seen the converters (Konverters) available.  I had some correspondence with the folks at VTI last year, and they said they had 'em in stock then, but I got involved in retiring and moving and was sidetracked.  I was about to post a question about availability of the Pocket Pistol Konverter when I ran across this thread.  I am glad to hear it isn't "vaporware." ;D

Raven

We also can convert the Rem 1863 to .22LR

The converter is $245 + $50 to line the barrel. We have also converted the percusion cylinders to .22 for several customers for $125.

I have a Remington pocket pistol C&B like the bottom one you have in your picture. Did you say it was a .22?

How much total would it cost me to have it converted to either .32 or to .22?

Does it allow the use of .32 S&W shorts and would it function well using factory loaded ones?

Sorry if this was addressed in the thread but I'm not understanding all the talk of reloading and stuff.

Just call me ignorant on the subject of this model.

Also, the .32 S&W shorts I have are smokeless. Is that something this gun can handle?

Thanks in advance.

Raven

Hi RickB,

The converters are both $245
The .22 requires the addition of a barrel liner (permanent) for $50

If your not a reloader the .32 is NOT for you.... the gun will not function correctly with factory ammo.
If you are a reloader the .32 will work just fine with smokeless.

Raven

Great. I guess I will have to look into the .22 conversion then. I do reload, but only 9mm and .45 Colt. I don't have the equipment for .32 and probably wouldn't want to invest in it since I would only shoot it a limited amount.

Do you have a web site I can check this out at?

How do I go about getting the conversion done?

Inquiring minds want to know.  ;D

Raven

Most of our product is on the web site. www.kirstkonverter.com

The .22 caliber 1863 Remington is a special order item and is not on the web page. But, give me a call and I can answer any questions you may have.

Usually turn around time on conversion work is under 3 weeks.

I'm going to be in touch with you. I think this would be a great way to get some use out of my little pocket Remington. The price sounds good.

Thanks for the info.

Are the Pocket Pistol conversion cylinders gated? I can't tell from that photo...

Also, does anyone know if the Pocket Pistols have the same accuracy issues as converted .36's? (ie - wrong size bullets for the bore)

Raven

The pocket conversions are not gated same as the originals.

The .32's are a handloaded only proposition....so if loaded with the right bullets and loads can be very accurate.

The .22s are very accurate with quality ammo but do not function well with cheap/crappy Remington bulk pac ammo.

Raven,
I can't believe I missed this post earlier! Do you have any more of the .32 Konverters? Are these going to be a regular item available from y'all?

Can't figure how these little shooters can be close to accurate . Mine has a barrel groove measurement of .323 and the chambers are right around .315 .
Wish I could get it to shoot at 15 yards what my .32 H&R mag Single Six does at 25 , that would be a hoot.lol

willyboy

That .22 looks just like what I'll want. will you convert my brass frame?
