Hey Pards,
What's the best stuff to use for stuck cap n ball nipples??

hellgate

I put penetrating oil in the nipple cutout to (hopefully) soak down onto the threads the night before and set the cylinder chamber mouth down. Next day I put the cylinder in a PADDED vise if they don't come out by hand using a good nipple wrench. Then I set the wrench onto the nipple and tap the wrench with a hammer a few times and give it another try. If it still doesn't come out I tap on the wrench with the hammer as I twist on the wrench. Recently I bought a steel ratcheted nipple wrench for the tough ones but haven't needed it yet but it's supposed to be the best wrench for your problem. Once I get the nips out I apply anti seize grease to the threads and pretty much leave them alone after that. Maybe once a year (or less) I take them out but if they are working flawlessly, I leave well enough alone. Other opinions differ with mine.

Kroil.  Hand-down, best I've used.

I've used Kroil on original perscusion guns (revolvers & shotguns) that have been sitting....in some cases loaded...for a veery long time.
Let this stuff penetrate for a few days, up to a week. Reapply a drop or two per day. All came out real easy. Good tips from Hellgate on use of a vise / wrench.

I don't remove them from my "working" guns. Just back them out 1/2 turn and snug tham after each clean & lube of the cylinder.

I saw a test done on various preparations... Kroil was up there. The winner in this particualr test was a 50%-50% mixture of ATF and acetone. ATF and acetone are really stinky-messy.. I would reach for the Kroil can first. BP blaster is right up there as well.  If you need to try ATF/acetone, drop the cylinder in a solvent-resistant container of it and cover it so that the acetone does not evaporate.

When I replace the nipples I put a very small amount of aviation spark plug lubricant on the threads.

Seems to me that anything that stands up to that application will work for c&b nipples

Kroil has always worked for me.  Soak it overnight in a cup of the stuff.  Use never seize (silver stuff- auto parts stores have it) on the threads before reinstalling the nipples and don't tighten it up real tight.  Snug is good.  IMO all nipple wrenches are junk. I broke (cracked) a few, then  I modified a Snap On square socket to remove the nipple from a Euroarms Remington Zouave. Two gorillas must have put it in when it was built.  No problem removing it now.  I shoot it a lot, in N-SSA matches.  Good shooting!  Bob :)

I've had good luck with TKX, a penetrating/preservative oil I use at work.
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Steel Horse Bailey

I have broken one nipple trying to get it out.  I had not - in 20+ years had a problem BEFORE then, but this Pietta nipple changed.  Now I use automotive anti-seize paste on the threads periodically.  (About every other time I remove them)  I had tried using the old Penetrating Oil I had cfrom "back when" but had only let it "soak" for a few minutes, so it may not have had time to work.  After this problem was solved (- very UN-satisfactorily, I might add, because I ended up having to drill out the remainder of the nipple and ended up ruining one chamber and can't use it now -) so I had heard about the "wonders" of Kroil Oil, "the oil that creeps!"

When the Kroil Oil arrived from Brownells, I used it.  Lo and behold, it appears (by sight, smell & feel) like the same old penetrating oil that I've been using for 3+ decades, but in a Red/Orange & White can instead of the Olive Drab (Military Surplus) green!   :o  LoL!  It DOES work, but it needs more time to "soak" than I gave it on the Pietta nipple!

One of my "secrets" has been to always loosen ( about 1/2 turn), then re-snug, all the cones after each firing/cleaning/lubing cycle. I use plenty of lube when doing so. Oil works its into the threads by this technique. If you don't think there is enough lube, add one drop after loosening the 1/2 turn. Never had a failure with this method.

Generally, I only remove the cones for the annual white-glove treatment once per year at end of the shooting season (If I remember). Never had a problem regardless.

I also have a metric tap set & have revived a couple cylinders for friends who did not take such good care of their arms.

Some great advise on this topic fer sure.

I follow the advise above . However I have had good results with just using a good food grade grease when I reinstall the nipps.

I like the Kroil oil for removing tough nipps. I do not remove them but about once a year or less. Reinstall with the food grade grease.
