I got a cool tool in the mail today. It is a burnisher I can chuck into my drill, and polish the edges of my holsters. It is made out of rosewood, and is very well made. It appears to be lathe turned, and is very heavy for its size.

Here is a link to the site.. http://leatherburnishers.com/Burnishers_for_Drills.html

I bought the Holster Makers Special, and the grooves on it will fit anything I am working on, unlike the plastic Tandy wheel thing they sell (which I have in my drill press, but rarely use).

I burnished an edge earlier by just rubbing it, and it worked very well that way too. I cant wait to get it under power and give it a try.

I just chucked it into a hand drill here at work, and it is well balanced. I will give a better report after I use it.

Looks to have potential! Let us know how it works Dalton!

That's a neat looking tool - am anxious to hear how you like it.  I've used a piece of 3/8" hickory dowel in my drill press for a long time which works well for burnishing holsters, belt edges, etc. - was cheap too as it was a cut-off of a hickory dowel I used for a ramrod on a rifle I built.  The one you got should work great . . . especially with all the grooves . . . the wood is very dense and it looks like it could handle just about anything you can throw at it!  Thanks for showing it to us!   :)

Dalton I have one and use it all the time. You will love it. I use Weavers unit for large jobs. KT

Well folks. I stuck it in my drill press, adjusted my speed to about 1300rpm or so, and it does a dandy job of burnishing. With just water (spit), it smoothed it very nice, and gave it a nice toasty brown color.
I will be interested to try it with some wax in the future.

KT, that Weaver one is on my short list. Is it very loud?

Wow, That is cool.
I made a couple up using Nylon rollers and epoxied in the shaft. Not as nice as those you posted.
Thanks!  ;D

KidTerico

Dalton not to bad but you dont want to leave it running when your not useing it. It would get annoying. KT

Looks like this tool would work well on a slow speed,

10W, the guy that sells them suggested that they work best at the 1-2k rpm range. I tried it to begin with on the 600rpm setting on my press, and it worked, but not as well as the next step up, which is 1300 rpm or so on mine.

I think I remember remember hearing 1300to 1700 is fine, but never higher than that, or it will burn the wood and the leather.

Dalton,  Let us know how it works out for you after you have used it for a while.

Thanks for the link, Dalton. I'll have to think about one of those. I have a wooden one I got years ago, but the results are not all that great in a drill. The design on the holster one looks really good.

Dalton after looking at that tool for a few days, I ordered a couple for the Dremel since I don't have a drill press.  ;D

I think I will probably order a few for the dremel too. Something that I can manuever around to get tight spots. The drill press one works really well, as long as I havent already riveted on a belt loop and forgot to edge it.. :-[
I think a small dremel one would work well for these little goofs and touch ups.

Dalton, received the burnishers today for the dremel.  Tried them out on a piece of scrap ... they work really sweet!  Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Glad it worked for you.
I think I am going to order another one, and maybe a single dremel one for touch up work.

Yes, speed is the critical thing. I was scratching my head at first because my burnisher wouldn't burnish. Then I turned the speed up.....voila!
