I am seriously considering getting sucked into the borg.  Biggest hold up right now is my rifle.  I shoot a Rossi 92, 44 mag and really do not want to detail strip the darn thing.  PITA is not just some kinda mid eastern thru Pakistan bread.

Can I get by just sorta rinsing the action out with murphys followed by a little balistol or should I hold out to buy a 73 44/40 before taking the plunge?

58 remmies and the Baikal shotgun are not a problem neither are Vagueros old or new if I go FC.

I pull the stock on my 92 and hose the innards with Napa's break cleaner. Let it dry out
then spray a bit of Balistol inside. I did find a bit of rust this year where the magaziine tube
enters the action. I like to use a bore snake on the barrel.  Regards, TJ

Just a point:  You do not get sucked in.  One morning you wake up, turn around and fall in head first never to be the same again.

If you take the plug & spring out, ya know you can use that same bore snake to clean & lube the mag tube don't you? ;)

I've got a Rossi '92 myself, in 38spl, and I have found no noticeable amount of BP fouling entering the action.  It's actually cleaner than my '73 after a day of shooting.

If you can rig up a funnel and a tube, or if you know a shooter who is a plumber who can do this, you can put it in the chamber, then pour a kettle full of hot water down and out the muzzle, dry patch, then Balistol, and you'd be good to go.  Patches with Balistol in the action to dab out residual funk.

I only detail strip and clean once a year.
God forgives, I don't........

very interesting and informative.

Seems like I am not the only parsimonious one out there.  I would say niggardly but some ignorant soul who does not know the derivation of that word would call me racist, but it turns out there is a huge difference between an e and an a.

I have .38 & were no issues with fouling causing rust or stoppages. I cleaned with my stanard method, from muzzle, with a fired, empty case in chamber. Wipe magazine tube annually & a spritz the carrier & interior lightly/wipe-out after each session.

Since then, I moved into 1873, 1866 all in 44-40......primariy due to the earlier time period, smothness& relliability of the toggle-action & preference for BP.

One consideration might be to use 44 special brass rather than (I'm assuming) the thicker 44 mag stuff. One problem with BP fouling is whether the case will seal the gases in the chamber with the lower pressure of BP. If the thicker 44 mag brass doesn't swell easily to seal then you'll get more fouling everywhere. I have two Rossis in .357mag and have never fully stripped either down for cleaning. I have been using 777 for the last several years and it has more punch than BP but the first 3  or so years I used real gunpowder in both 38SPL and 357mag and did not have much problem with fouling in other than the bore. I've just read posts by people who have had BP fouling the action with the 44 mags but have no first hand knowledge. However the thinner bottlenecked 38-40 and 44-40 brass is legendary for keeping the fouling inside the chamber. I think dick Dastardly shoots a 44  mag. Maybe he'll have a comment if that is true.

I used to use a Rossi '92 in .357. Always used .38 cases(wouldn't feed .357) I used mostly 777, some APP. Usually had some fouling in the action, I usually flushed it out with spray carburetor cleaner, od WD 40 if I didn't have brake cleaner, blow out with air hose, followed by Ballistol. MOST of the time that prevented any rust. I never tried real bp in it.

Howdy and welcome cpt dan blodgett!

Ever since I shot my first round down range at a SASS match I've shot 44 Magnum ammo loaded with black powder.  I shoot a Browning 92 44 Mag.  I call them 44 Magnum cartridges 44 ELR (Extra Long Russian).

First, since the 44 Magnum cartridge is a relatively recent development, the chamber specifications are more precise.  This means your ammo will fit the chamber better than the century old and older chamberings.  Since the ammo fits better the case doesn't have to swell as much to seal well and prevent blowback.  That's what I've learned from my original Ruger Vaqueros and my B92s.

Shooting Big Lube®LLC bullets will ease your cleanup and keep your 44 ELR guns running trouble free and accurate thru at least a full annual match with no need to clean between stages or days.  The Mav Dutchman is the bullet you want.  Lube size them to .429" for 44 Mag, 44 spl and 44 Russian use.

Have fun, enjoy the smoke.  You're in very good company.

Howdy

Seeing as the Model '92 was developed when Black Powder was still the most common type of propellant, of course you can shoot Black Powder in one.

I have two original Winchester Model 1892s, one made in 1894, the other in 1919. I shoot Black Powder in both of them. Of course, both my rifles are chambered for 44-40, which makes cleaning a snap, because almost all of the fouling stays in the barrel anyway.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!
