Hopalong Cassidy....

One Saturday in the early fifties my parents went shopping. They left my younger brother and I alone in the house. We made a fort out of the sofa cushions and watched Hoppy on TV. We strapped on our cap guns and fired about a dozen rolls of caps. When my parents returned, the downstairs was full of smoke. My Dad confiscated our cap guns, my Mom ran after us with her pancake turner and we were never left alone again.
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

Thanks Don. That happened about sixty years ago and I'll never forget it.

I never got to meet the Duke. I got to meet and hang out with Ben Johnson on several occasions. Ben was an outstanding roper. In 1953, he took time off from the movies and won the Prca Steer roping Championship. We were at a Celebrity roping at Fort Worth and Ben rode over to talk to me. He tipped his hat to my wife, which really made her day. Ben was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word and a real Cowboy.

When you was a kid  :D( if you can remember back that far :o) who was you favorite Cowboy ???

Mine was the Lone Ranger I'm telling my age but when I was a kid he was on the radio, ;D also Gunsmoke when it was on the radio and TV I watched it a lot..

I had several favorites: Paladin, Cheyenne, Josh Randall, Yancy Deringer, Gil Favor and Hoss Cartright come immediately to mind, but I watched all the TV Westerns when I was a kid.  Except for Gil Favor and Hoss I don't think many of my TV Western heroes were cowboys.

I also liked Rex Allen and Crash Corrigan (mainly because we used to go to his "ranch" when I was a kid).

I met Crash and also "Frog" from the Gene Autrey show when I was about 9 or 10.

Tascosa Joe

The Duke was a good man as well.  I met him at the T-Cross Horse Sale in Colo in 73.  He was looking at a horse he had bought and my wife was in the stall area carrying our 6 mo old son to keep him quite.  The Duke took Bill out of her arms played with him and told her he was the prettiest baby he had ever seen.  That made her day.  Bill now shoots as the BoJon Kid.

Cool story, Joe.  Although I gotta go with Roy Rogers on this one.  That's where the silver hat band on my black hat comes from.  Yeah, i know I can't wear it at our NCOWS matches.  ;D

Old cowboys are over 80, myself I'm not even 70 yet.
To pick a favorite, Wow thats hard. Watched them all but especially liked Lash Larue. Just recently watched the original fill length verion of the Lone Ranger. It was great.

my mother had a Barber's razor strap. My older brother should me how to jump in bed and pull the blanket tight so it took some of the sting out of the blows.
I was in trouble once as a toddler because I got hold of my mother power puff and went around my parents bedroom pretending I was shooting, throwing power into the air and all over everything.
Another thing I remember is being at a small country funeral and while the grownups were attending services my brother and I were off playing cowboys and indians . I got shot at the top of a hill and fell, rolled down the hill and right through a fresh cow pie. Everyone was laughing at me and wouldn't let me in the their car. I was bawling my eyes out and I'll never forget it.

Now thinking back, if you were to listen to the music preludes to the old westerns, how many would you get right or better yet name their horses. I had the oppertunity to brush up on these down in Oklahoma City. Brought back lots of good memories.  Steve had the chance to shake hands with Roy Rogers at the Rose Bowl Parade. Said he didn't wash that hand for several days.

How about Sky King!
Sixguns, horses, hats and  airplanes ! ! (Cessna T-50, Cessna 310)

How many country kids went in to aviation as a result of this show?
And by the way both Kirby Grant and Glorai Winters held pilot's licences.

(p.s. - I got my helicopter licence in 1981 - flew the bush for 20 years)   :)
Well.... see, if you take your time, you get a more harmonious outcome.

Forty Rod

Red Rider was, and still is, my favorite.  His little sidekick was a waste if skin, though.
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.
