My favorite was always the Cisco Kid, for some reason.  I always thought that the Mexican Cowboys looked the best, what with those short jackets and big sombrero's!  Likewise I thought that Manuelito on "The High Chaparral" was the coolest of the TV cowboys for the same reason.  I guess that's why I usually ride a Mexican saddle these days, too...!   ;)

However, looking back on the old Westerns, I agree with those who voted William S. Hart.  That man really had it!

Cheers!

c.o.jones, I was down at the Smokey Mountain Knife Works (some place to visit) they have a section of old VHS movies. There it was Tom Mix Riders of the Purple Sage. I now own it and it's great, even if it is silent. By the way his great horse was Tony.
Books, Tom Mix was a REAL cowboy too. Tj

Wasn't Mix one of Wyatt Earp's pallbeares?

I believe you are right.  I seem to remember pictures of them together on a movie set.

Think Hart was also a pallbearer for Mr. Earp. It seems to me that Tom Mix was also a peace officer at one time. a real old west sheriff. Tj

Bro. Texas Jack, He was also a MM, a RAM, and Commandary. There is a Tom Mix Museum in Dewey, Okla.  I have visited and saw several of Bro. Tom's York Rite stuff.

Thanks for bringing back lots of faded memories on this topic...I at least know all these folks are by sight & voice.....Probably the last generation who'd know (I'm just a shade over 50).

Well, I was sitting in Roy's theater/Museum (Branson) just a few years ago (their last season, I believe)....lady next to me was genuinely surprised that my wife, son & I were there for the show., & inquired if I really knew any of these characters & music....we'll heck-yeah I said. She could still hardly believe me. Dusty gave my son a "Trigger" stuffed animal & told him, "son, I know you're just a bit old to play with this, but I'd really like you to have one"...then signed the tag for him, too. I was glad to be able to take my son to see the collection while it was still together. I saw Dusty & the Sons of Pioneers are still kickin' over at one of the other venues while we were in Branson last year.

Tim McCoy - left Michigan as a teenager to ride a freight to Wyoming and became a cowboy and later rancher, before becoming a movie star. Had a young John Wayne in several of his movies. He could sure ride a horse.

Rowdy Yates and Gill Favor. The Lone Ranger, John Wayne, Audy Murphy (for his cowboy rolls and his service to our country). And just about any Jimmy Stewart movie where he played a cowboy. Destry rides again was a good one. So was The Man who shot Liberty Valance.

Oh yeah, how about Chuck Connors as the Rifleman and Steve McQueen in Wanted Dead or Alive?

Don't forget Paladin. Have gun will travel.

I never got to meet the Duke. I got to meet and hang out with Ben Johnson on several occasions. Ben was an outstanding roper. In 1953, he took time off from the movies and won the Prca Steer roping Championship. We were at a Celebrity roping at Fort Worth and Ben rode over to talk to me. He tipped his hat to my wife, which really made her day. Ben was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word and a real Cowboy.
Jim......I have photos of John Wayne I took while I was stationed at the Army Pictorial Center in New York in 1966, they've never been published.

These aren't cowboys but how about Charles Stevens (Geronimo's grandson), early silent actor and all the way into the late 1940's. Chief Yellowhatchie, early Indian actor who was also an opera star.  J. Silverheels, early stuntman, later actor. Eddie Little Sky. Ned Romero.

TOM MIX WAS MY FAVORITE. HE DID ALL OF HIS OWN STUNTS. NO SISSY BOY. READ A BOOK CALLED......TOM MIX DIED FOR YOUR SINS....... GREAT READ.........REGARDS...C.O. JONES

Tom Mix was also a City Marshal in Dewey, Oklahoma, worked for the 101 Ranch Show as a trick rider, trick shooter, and rodeo performer, and tended bar at the Blue Belle Saloon in Guthrie, Oklahoma. We have a beer in his honor every year at the Blue Belle when we're at Landrun. Take care.

Terry, I didn't realize that Tom had been City Marshal in Dewey. I've been to the Museum in Dewey and really enjoyed it.

Gives you another reason to admire ol' Tom doesn't it? He was the real thing. You Lawdogs gotta stick together. He had the reputation in the 101 ranch show of being one of the best pistol shots, mounted or dismounted, as well as being one of the best riders of 'em all. Are you going to make it up again this year for GAF? It's always good to see you. I've offered before, but you've got an apartment to stay in for free in Lincoln when you're thru here. Take care.

Terry, I am probably not coming up there for the GAF Muster, but I have made plans to attend the Rock Creek Station this year. I'll see you guys on that Monday after Rock Creek.
