1 buffalo robe=3 metal knives-25 loads of ammunition-1-gallon metal kettle-36 iron arrowpoints and 1-1/2 yards of calico
3 buffalo robes=1 white blanket
...10 ermine pelts=100 elk teeth

Maybe I'm slow, but who would the parties be tradin' elk teeth for ermine pelts? Most of these seem likely white/Indian trades, but that one..I don't know...

I'd guess the Indian wanted the elk teeth (just the ivory ones) for decorating dresses, & the whites wanted ermine pelts to ship back to Europe for fancy clothing for the rich & royal.

"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it
