Darksiders, I need your help. Sold my flintlock rifle a couple of years ago and I now have four Goex 1lb cans of ffffg flintlock pan priming powder left over. Would it be safe to mix a little bit of it into my ffg powder to extend it for use in my cap and ball pistols, or is that insane? I know that it is a very fast burning powder.

Don't know any buckskinners anymore to give it to and can't legally sell the ffffg powder, so my only other alternative would be to pour it on the ground and light it off with cannon fuse on the 4th of July.

You can shoot the FFFFg in the revolvers just fine. Maybe the equivalent load of FFF or FF would be 10% less 4F. In my old Lyman Black powder manual there are a bunch of ballistics with 4F & 3F in the various revolvers in 31, 36 & 44 cal.

Thanks for responding hellgate...not too hot of a load? I had that old Lyman Black powder manual years ago, but can't find it anymore after several moves. Maybe I should buy another copy.

The 4F Goex actually showed LOWER pressures for the ball and conical but the C&H (Curtiss & Harvey) powder showed and increase in pressure with the 4F so go figure. Lyman 1st ed BP Handbook
To find any book you are looking for try your local library,  bookfinder.com or addall.com
The .coms are internet linked book sellers that have databases going into bookstores all over the country. I'll see someone selling a neat book on western history or shooing on the SASS Wire for 20 bucks and I'll find it on bookfinder for 5.

I found Gearhart and Owens / GOEX FFFg to be very effective in getting rid of gophers in a yard.

Seriously.

Was on a posse with a pard that shot 4F in cartridge pistol and rifle. Real good smoke factor and he shot the 12 stage match clean. I likened his 4F loads to sounding like a smokeless load, more than sounding like a BP load. He was shooting Rugers and a 73. He was shooting a more conventional BP load in his 97 shotgun.
So, it is workable. Myself though it is economy to use 2f when I can, so I load it in cartridge and shotgun. It fills the volume up at less weight. A pound can of Goex is a pound by weight. Figure the pound at volume at more than a pound by weight. Where else are you going to get more than a pound out of a pound? When I shoot C&Bs I use 3F, but that is a metering from my flask issue and not that 3F really is any different for CAS use at close in targets.  :)

Noz

I got a real good deal and bought 6 pounds of Pyrodex for $6/lb. 2 pounds of P and 4 pounds of RS. I mix 1 pound of P to 2 pounds of RS and it shoots just fine in my 12 ga.  I know it's not Black but the principle is the same

But Noz Pyrodex does flame a bit and other than a different smell it shoots fine. I don't know another sub that you can get flame from. Prices are getting up there now and if you got a deal then more power to you. I seem to never get much of a deal, except I bought some 3F Goex Pinnacle that was closing out and it turned out to be mismarked on the cans and the case too. It was 2F. No problem though, I shoot it in cartridges and just like APP it makes it's own lube and real easy to clean up. :)
