.52 caliber, 29" octagonal barrel, 1.125" across the flats of barrel, serial number 50917. Barrel marked S. Hawken, St Louis. in single-line. Spencer markings on top of frame. Carbine buttstock, "Hawken"-style forearm with double wedge and steel escutcheons with pewter tip. Wood ramrod under barrel with steel ferrules. It is believed that these were assembled by J.P. Gemmer, since Gemmer bought Samuel Hawken's shop in 1864. It is more than likely the used-up parts were left behind. The barrel's markings are genuine and is a real Hawken barrel. Rifle is out of the Merrill Deer collection where it had remained for more than 50 years.
