Howdy Spencerians,

Are any of you boys familiar with Spencer conversions to single shot, or those restocked to Hawken or Sharps style? I think I've seen a photo of a single shot but don't know if it was for a cartridge other that standard. I wonder about the strength and dimensions of the action for "buffalo" style cartridges.

Spencers by design will not cycle "buffalo" style cartridges.  The design will only allow for relatively short cartridges which explains its unpopularity as a buffalo rifle.  Some were converted to sporting style rifles by Gemmer and others, but the small cartridge lliimtations limited their popularity.  They were too underpowered and limited to short ranges.  Marcot`s book illustrates a number of such conversions.
