Flipped brim hats?

So as I have been studying and trying to develop what character I want to portray (that of a working cowboy  :) ) I have noticed in my research many pictures by Frederic Remington with cowboys and their hats. Their hats seem to usually flipped in the front or back.

I wanted to ask a few questions about this.

1. Is this accurate?
2. Where can I find a hat like this?

Thanks

A couple threads about working on hats:

As I've said many times before, wetting a hat with water is the slow way to do work on a hat and is only needed in rare cases or when working on palm leaf hats.  Use steam, anyone who owns a hat needs to own a tea kettle.

If you local western store don't carry hat stiffener make it yourself out of bleached natural shellac and denatured alcohol.  Thin it enough to go through a spray bottle and use no more than you have to, never use hair spray or starch to stiffen a hat.

And yes hats with the brims flipped up show up in a lot of historical pictures.

I forgot you wore one Curly.  I think one reason you don't see more of them is that among the followers of the "John Ford Referance Library" they are thought of as only worn by some goofy sidekick.   I remember doing one at work a couple years ago for someone.  As he was looking in the mirror some guy came in and commented that it was they type of hat a dork would wear.  Of course the guy with the stupid comment was one of the bar/rodeo crowd. ::)

Get a hat the color you want and start steaming it and shaping it the way you think you want it.  If it don't come out right, just re-steam it and try again.  Hats are like modeling clay, you can just keep changing the shape all you want.

Some folks could destroy a crow bar in a sand box.  In case you haven't figured it out, there is one of us here that does this as a living and I doubt it's you.  If you destroyed your hat band it's because you have no idea what you are doing or else you are BSing us, I suspect the latter.  Go into any place that works on hats as a business, they use steam for 99% of  any shaping they do on hats. This forum is for exchanging good information, not for someone with a total lack of knowledge to give bad advice.

Use hot water. If you don't have another cowboy hat to wear while that one drys....you don't have enough cowboy hats. I find the shower the perfect place to shape my hat.

Do not use boiling water.... and steam can cook the fibers. These hats are made out of animal stuff......the same animals you can cook.
