Slowhand Bob, once a long time ago I was also on the Railroad. I was an Engineer for 23 yrs.......still hold senority..

Well some good news. Steve says a shipment is arriving in CA in five days. Then has to go through customs. So I'm thinking could have a machine in a couple weeks.

Update on the Cobra 4 performance!

Steve sent me new thread and it made all the difference. It was the thread all along, someone with more experience would have figured that out right away but since this was my first rodeo it took a while for me to realize it wasn't operator error.

Outrider!!! Do you normally need to change the thread tension when sewing heavy or light material? The way Steve has it set is perfect for 2 up to 5 layers of 8-9 oz but I ran some test pieces of 8 oz total to see how it would do on a money belt and with the thin material the bobbin thread is pulling up to the top. I did try adding bobbin thread tension and it appears to be as tight as it will go.

Will I also need to back off of the top thread tension now that I've gone to 277? It sews the thick materials perfectly the way it was set for the heavier thread.

Cliff,  I have never had a problem with thickness variation, however I made minor adjustments to the top tension only.  Were the test peices one thickness or two pieces sewn together???

It was one thickness, I'll try two thinner 4 oz ones to see what it will actually do on a money belt but was hoping I could sew the single thickness as a decorative stitch on some projects.

Like Outrider, I have never had to mess with the bobbin tension.  I do have to adjust the top tension sometimes when I change thicknesses.  Just run some test pieces and you should be good to go.  I'm glad your Cobra is working properly.  There is a little bit of a learning curve, but I think you will really like the machine.

I'm liking the Cobra 4 and getting better with it, the digital servo motor is sweet, you can just let it creep or let-r rip. Right now I've just got it where the motor will only turn  600rpm so it just gently moves along even with the petal all the way down. Really nice maneuvering on these knife sheaths. It's like driving a race car, I can slow down in the turns and speed up in the straight away :D

Cliff,

The reasonI asked about the "one or two" piece thickness is that I have on occasion had "pull through" with one layer...as soon as you go to two layers the stitch is normal.....let me know how you make out with this....also..if you can try to sew some 3 to 4 oz. and see how that stitch looks.  As far as SPI (stitch per inch) I usually run 6 SPI...sometines 5

Outrider,

Are you going to come to the long range shoot tomorrow?  We'll need your help to put Marshal Too Tall in his place.

Yep, had to tell them everything to do, come ahead, back up stop, faster slower, you name it.  No doubt the brakeman was the smart one on the job!   ;) ;)

Slowhand Bob

No, their reply was the funny part.  The engineers always said I was never awake long enough to be the smart one!   :o

As a kid, I use to fall asleep by listening to the 9 o'clock go through, that clickidy clack clickidy clack would put me right out.
