Bobbed Walker

I sold the first Walker I had a while back.  So when I came upon a deal on another one that someone had started to bob, but never finished, I jumped on it.  It came to me minus 2" of the barrel.  I took off 2" more.  So now it has a 5" barrel with matching loading lever.  You might think that loading lever would be pretty useless.  But I made a 5" long extension piece that slips over it for more leverage.  The extension is what is propping the Walker up for the photos.  Did some tweaking' and tunin' inside, added a new front sight, then gave it an aged patina finish.  It's still a beast, but a managable beast now.  Haven't been to the range yet, but I'm sure it will be an attention getter  ;D

I'm not much on naming guns, but somehow "Donner & Blitzen" strikes me as appropriate ;)

That is FANTASTIC !  :)    I tried to save your picture, . . but they wouldn't save.  Yu'll have fun with that. . . . someone asks you "what it is?" . . . you can just tell 'em it is a "Pocket Pistol" . . .for Paul Bunyan ?   ;D
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

That's the first "quick draw" Walker I've ever seen (or ever will see)!

Lopping off 4" of barrel and loading lever made a significant improvement in balance.  Its still a handful, but it is much easier to hold steady without drooping.  I'm not using it for CAS, just fun.  Now I need to decide what kind of holster it needs.

Wolfgang - shoot me your e-mail address, I'll send you a photo if you'd like.

How about calling it;

THE AVENGING TROLL!

Like the cut-down 1860 Colt's used by those Mormon enforcers, but not as svelt.

Sir Charles, did you know those Avenging Angels were factory guns?

Which ones?  The ones used by Porter Rockwell & friends, or the ones I found in the link pinched from "thehighroad"?  I think you could get almost anything from the factories in those days, but I assumed that most of the C&B snubbies were cut down except for the '49's & '62's.

Bet you don't have the problem with the loading lever dropping any more either!
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Thanks boys, I appreciate your comments.  I did the standard Walker loading lever latch mod, so it holds quite a bit better than before.  With a much lighter loading lever, I think it will hold fine.  I did the same mod on a standard ASM Walker and it worked well.

The information I ran into a wjile back is that the "Danites" a Mormon men's group got tired of being pushed around and asked Colt to make up a batch of short barreled 1860s that became known as Avenging Angels.

YMMV

I'd like to see some documentation on that, Noz.  On the other hand I've been a Mormon for 69 years and have yet to see any convincing evidence that the Danites even existed.  Rockwell is said to have claimed that some of the men came up with the story and spread it around among the "gentiles", and that the fear of the story did as much as an actual group could have done.  Every death in the Rocky Mountains was blamed on the Danites for years.

On the other hand, his bobbed '60 exists and is documented.

On yet another hand, so have several other bobbed six-guns from that era.

On one more hand, I don't see why anyone would have gone to the trouble of having Colt make up pistols on special order...undoubtedly at extra cost...when the guns could have been simply cut off locally in less than an hour...a bit more for dovetailed sights and the rammer.  I did one thirty years ago with a tubing cutter, a 45 degree counter sink drill and some files, and it worked out beautifully.

This thread shows it can be done

I think most of the story came from "Danite Dan".

Weren't the Danites a secret organization anyway?

I know there was a lot of anger and fighting in the Independence, Mo area.

Quite a lot of info, whether good or bad on Google.

Dances With Coyotes

That has got to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen......Got me itching for a bobbed Cap-n-ball. I've got me a 1851 Navy thats been converted to .38 S&W but still has the original 7 &1/2" barrel that would be a perfect candidate.
All you need is love and a .45

ndnchf

A bobbed '51 Navy would indeed be cool.  Although it doesn't need the bob job to help its balance like the Walker did.  But for something a little different, it would fit the bill.

I aquired a very rough ASM '58 Remington with brass frame as a part of a deal . . . and wondered whut to do with it,  . . so bobbed the barrel and made me a "sherriff's" model.    www.drburkholter.com/cf4.html  :)

Wolfgang,
Thank you so much for the link to the photo of your loading bench. Now I truly feel I am in good company. My benches may look like a complete mess but I know where everything is. Thank you for showing me that I am not alone.
