Just purchased a copy of "The Cowboy Hat Book" by William Reynolds and Ritch Rand. Anyone considering the purchase of a new hat or how to care for a cowboy hat ought to read this book first. It is chock full of pictures and information on building, care and history of cowboy hats.List price is $19.99. I purchased mine new over ebay for $15.73 plus $3.99 shipping.
Do yourself a favor, purchase one, it's an interesting well thought out and quality made book. Lots of color pictures and interesting text.

Very good book, we have an autographed copy at work, Ritch Rand has forgot more about hats than most folks will ever know.

I'll bet he has. I'm not sure if they give tours, but I think it would be a real pleasure to be able to tour his shop (factory) in Montana.

Get your head measured for size and shape and order one, I bet he'd give you the tour. ;)  I've worked on a lot of hats, both custom and factory ones.  Never have found one I think is as good as his.  I like mine.

Del,
I'm seriously considering it. May try and stop by there on my next trip back east. Think I will be going that way this summer, if gas prices don't go out of sight. Yea right! First I have to decide on what style I want. Looking closely at the Tom Horn and open crown styles. Would like to try some on first to see how they look. May need to run into town to the Double H and try some on.

Mine is a 4X6 black open crown, his 10X 100% beaver grade.  1 1/4 inch ribbion in black, bound on the bottom only with a doubled black ribbon.  Slight pencil curl on the sides, slight dip front and back:

Others in the picture are my wife, my two daughters, my one SIL and the kids younger half sister that calls me Uncle Glen.

Nice looking family. Oh, by the way nice looking hat too. First pix of you I've seen all duded out. Pretty spiffy!

You do clean up well.
The traffic accident is unfortunate. You have my condolences.
