BP for .45-75 (but of course)

I apologize for the subject line on this one, and before anyone protests too much, understand that I intend to only use BP in my new rifle, but I need some advice on loading.

I have used BP for several years in muzzleloaders, including a 12 gauge fowler.  In patterning for this gun, i switched back and forth between 2F and 3F goex, with changes in velocity with the same amts of powder.

What I'm asking is can the same thing be applied in loading the .45-75 cases?  I kept 2F and 3F around here, but at this time I'm down to just about all 3F.  Is this appropriate for me to use in my reloads until i get some more 2F ordered?  Or should i reduce my load and use filler for these rounds?

Thanks,
Hugh

I have had excellent luck with 72 grains of Swiss 1½ BP under a 350 grain bullet.  I also have the earlier larger chamber in my 45-75 and have also had very good luck with 76 grains under a card with the same powder.  Velocities are in the 1400fps range.  I believe that if you look through earlier posts you will find some of the data that I have sent in for readers. ;)

I use Triple Seven - full case/slight compression - and they are stout loads. I wouldn't think 2F would be much more potent, but if in doubt use a filler card or two first and try it out.

I believe the gentleman is asking about the use of 3F. I believe you could but I would start out a little on the light side and work up. Don

Awfully hard if not impractical, to purt neart flirting with disaster , when using blackpowder in a bottle necked case, to use any less of a powder charge than that will fill the case to the juncition of the neck and the shoulder after the bullet and wad are seated.
Yes 3f will work , probably kick like a mule and foul bad enough that it'll make elephant brand powder fouling look like shooting smokeless....
1f , it's the one what brung the cartridge to the dance. ;)

I used 3F GOEX for my Chapparal NWMP carbine in .45-75, but then I started to run short of FFFg so I switched to "Cartridge" as I have a goodly supply. None of it will be dangerous IMHO. DO NOT TRY FFFFg!! Use the usual blackpowder loading procedures and YGTG.

I've been shooting and reloading the .45-75 for over 40 years.  I've used all of the granulations in blackpowder and always come back to 2F.  I always load to original factory specs and the 350 grian lead bullet with 72 grains of 2F black works extremely well.   The 2F black is what UMC and Winchester used in manufacturing factory ammunition. of this caliber.   I have experience only with original '76 rifles and carbines and I reload with original Winchester bullet molds and reloading tools.  The only brass that was available years ago was .348 Win., and that is what I still use today.   These cases are heavy and will only hold about 72 grains of 2F when weighed on a scale, but I load by volume and slightly compress my loads under a card wad.   I have never had a cartridge failure and I've never had a gun that wouldn't shoot this ammo with great accuracy.
