Which is the 'right' 44-40 bullet for accuracy?

Would be useful to know the diameter of the black center circle for each target shot...

I've also perused this thread (rather quickly) to see if other equipment is listed, such as type of rest used, bag positioning and most important, type of sights used.

Ok here is some information.
As w44wcf wrote, the target is the 100m rifle target. The black center is 20cm or 7.87 inch.

7 ring = 8 inch
8 ring = 6 inch
9 ring = 4 inch
10 ring = 2 inch
small 10 ring or in U.S. the X = 1 inch


This  is only , as we say in Germany,  Spiegel  .


As a rest i used my ' selfmade' rifle rest. I use it, when i shoot my Sharps.


At 50m i was sitting at a table using the rest.
100m and 150m prone postion with the rifle rest.

All with open sights.

When i was shooting at 150m, i use the Rapid Fire Pistol target as a background. Like this one.
The black circle is 50cm or 19.68 inch.

Great shooting!   No doubt, the targets prove it....the 427098 gave better performance at 150 meters by far!  Looks like about a 10 shot 3"  group.  EXCELLENT!

I must say that i was really surprise about the 427098.But after seeing your shooting results i hoped that could come near your results. And what happend? Bingo.
Tomorrow i will cast new bullets for next weekend. I hope that my results  was not a one-hit wonder.

The 427098 has been a pretty consistant performer with SWISS as long as I do my part  so...... as long as you are consistant in making good ammunition with it, it will consistantly perform well for you.

I know have the .432 200gr  2 cav (large lube groove) mold added to my very very small and completed collection.

Here is my problem with the Lyman 427666.
Alloy 20:1, Swiss3  35grs., wad 0.070 and Lube 103.

Today at 50m, 10 shots.


at 150m, 10 shots.1 miss,1 in white, 8 black.


2nd target at 150m, 10 shots. 4 miss, 6 black.


Looks like i was shooting with a coach gun.

Lonesome Henry, here is the new large groove bullet that replicates the original design with improvements.

Loaded a box of 44-40's with the recipe shown on the target. I used Goex because with the standard 427098 two lube groove bullet, it fouls out in 12-15 rounds.  So to see how this new bullet with its added lube capacity would preform with Goex, I set a couple of targets at 100 yards.

After firing several shots to get sighted in, I then fired additional rounds in some offhand practice until 15 remained. Those I fired at the target below.
With the exception of the shot at 9:00 (shooter error?) and the one slightly out of the 10 ring at 11:00, the rest are in or cuttting the 10 ring with 1 in and 2 cutting the X ring.

The group size for 13 rounds was just under 3" .

After the box (50 rds) was fired, the barrel showed even fouling for its complete 24" length. Success!



By tweaking the recipe a bit, the group size could probably be tightened but 13 rounds under 3" @ 100 yards is pretty good performance I'd say.......
