We all like to put photos of our work in our posts. Most of our cameras take huge photos that need to be reduced to 640x480 pixels or so before we can upload them.

For years, I've been using Windows XP and the add-on Power Toy Image Resizer. I recently upgraded to Windows 7. The old XP resizer won't work in W7. Although Windows Live Photo Gallery works for this, I wanted something more like I was used to. I found a good little program that resizes photos one at a time or any number selected. It takes a couple more steps than the XP program but it does a good job and works with a host of photo types. It's called FastStone Photo Resizer. For anyone wanting to try it, here's a link to the download page:

OK, here's another one for those who want an alternative:

PIXresizer

I tried them both and for batches, I preferred the FastStone one. For just one, take your pick.

For you pards still running XP, here's the link to the Microsoft download page for the Image Resizer (this is the best one of the bunch but it's for XP only):

[EDIT: MS no longer offers this and the link has been removed]

UPDATE 6/14/2015: I've been using FastStone for a few years now and it works flawlessly. It will reduce your photos and copy them to a new location in one step. If I want to reduce just one photo, I open it with MS Paint, reduce it then save it again. With Paint, it's a good idea to first make a copy of your photo before you reduce it or you'll loose the original resolution. -Marshal Will

I installed both and tried them. Then I uninstalled the one I didn't like as much.

I added a link to the the XP Image Resizer to in my post above for those still using XP. I'm also adding a link to this thread in our FAQ thread so it can be found easily in the future.

I still run XP and would like to load that program.

Do I need to download each of the options to be able to make it work? I just couldn't find the information on the link.

Thanks Marshall!

Cool, I have been having to email them to myself and optimize them for easier sending, then posting them.

Glad to help, Ned. It's the 11th one down the right side of the XP Power Toys page under "Download". It's called ImageResizer.exe . The rest of them are different add-ons.

Another good one that works for Windows 7 is FastStone Resizer. It's a free download, donations appreciated if you like it. That's what I tried when I retired my XP machine.

I use PaintShop Pro for most of my image editing. (infact I have Adobe Photo, and I often go back to psp cuz it is more user friendly and often takes less clicks.)

for resizing you just clicn on resize and pice the size of image you want and away it goes. And it works on about 40 some images Some I have never even heard of..

Going to Win7 was a forced march for me cuz my computer broke down, so I have to releard lots of stuff. For instance, I was downloading songs from iTunes and realized they were an apple mpg4 and my car stereo only had mpg3. I did a google and found a mpg4 to mpg 3 converter and it came from cnet...it converted 17 songs in about 30seconds.

If anyone is interested in the name of the software give a holler.

and yes Ricky, you too can learn how to resize...

Great info Will.  Now - for  those of us who have gone to Apple - any suggestions for a simple program that will allow for simple editing?  Something that will easily resize, change DPI resolution, etc.?  I got so sick and tired of my laptop with Vista that when it crashed and died, my wife convinced me to switch to Apple Mac Pro laptop - which I like - BUT - I can't do these things on "I-photo".

I worked several hours last night trying everything to get my photos (which I photographed in Basic resolution on my Nikon D-200) and couldn't get them small enough to post.  On my old computer, I'd change the resolution to about 74 DPI and resie them so they'd download easily.  The I-photo won't let me do that and I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that has all the bells and whistles that I'll never use - I just want something simple to resize, change resolution and enhance.

Anyone out there with an Apple  who can help or make suggestions?  Thanks!

I'm not a good source for Mac stuff. Maybe one of the other pards here can help with that. I would think that as photo friendly as Mac is, there should be a program that will resize photos. After all, even MS Paint in Windows will do it. Come to think of it, that's a good idea for Windows pards to use without installing anything special.
