primers for magtech shot shells. 12 gauge

I have found myself a little short handed on the CCI Large Rifle primers I have been using for my brass shotgun shells. However I do have ample supply of CCI Large Pistol primers and Federal Large Pistol Magnum primers. Is there any reason those would not work ok for my 12 gauge loaded with Schutzen 3f? It is a right smart trip down off this mountain to the nearest toy store to get primers so hopefully the ones I got would work ok.

I say use your pistol primers, that's what magtech recommends

You only need to use standard large pistol primers with your brass hulls. Different test have been done that show they deliver the best burn for real BP as it needs very little to start it's burn. In fact some of the top BP long range shooters put a piece of paper between the primer and powder charge so that they receive a better burn. It has shown to make a difference of inches on the targets.

Large pistol primers and ffg powder is all I use in mine - with good results.

Any large pistol Primer, standards work fine...
Fg,  FFg, FFFg they all will work. Traditionally Fg or FFg, I use Fg because I have it and it makes cool amounts of fire.

When I was a newbie to brass shotshell reloading i had all of mine either delivered or converted to 209 shot shell primers.

When I start having to replace any - if and when that happens I will start just leaving them set for the standard primers.

I have another question about BP in brass shotgun shells. We use a BP style lube in cartridge guns but what about shotgun shells?

Do any of ya'll put any lube like SPG or one of the others out there on the 1/2 cushion wad or is a BP lube not necessary in a shotgun?

Just out of curiosity since you're using brass shells, are you seating the primers via a press, or hand seating them?

I know a lot of people hand load their brass shotshells (including me). And if that is the case, I would highly recommend NOT using CCI primers since they are so volatile.

I load my primers in probably a very unorthodaox way using the RCBS hand held priming tool I use for priming my other cartridges. I do not have one of the larger more progressive type outfits-just very basic single stage set up from RCBS. What I do is this. I had to grind the lip off the top of my hand held priming tool so that the brass shot shell holder , which is larger than the ones for 45 colt and 44/40, would position properly over the hole for the plunger to come up to seat a primer. I basically have to squeeze the handle twice to seat one primer. The first squeeze of the handle seats the 1st primer about 1/2 way into the primer pocket. I guess with the shot shell shell holder the plunger is a little too short. I release the handle which allows the next primer to position it self to be pushed up and I use this second primer to seat the first primer flush into the primer pocket. Then that second primer becomes the 1st primer for the next shell which is seated only 1/2 way into the primer socket and the next squeeze of the handle uses the next primer to seat the previous primer completely into the primer pocket and on and on and on. This has worked well for me and has created no problem with damaging the primers being seated by another primer and have never had a FTF. Just some old North Georgia mountain engineering I quess. Works for me.
Loaded up 75 of them yesterday and hope to get out to the range this weekend to kill some skeeters.

TP I do use lubed wads:)

I know many who use just plain wads, plastic wads and lube wads.

As long as you have a good square load lube or not does not seem to matter much for them big holed shotguns.

I do think it keeps the fouling just a little bit softer - but that is just me!
