Old Doc

Caught some of the John Wayne festival on AMC over the weekend. Anyone ever notice that El Dorado and Rio Bravo are the same movie with different actors. In El Dorado, James Cann (Mississippi) plays the Ricky Nelson (Colorado) part. Arthur Hunnicutt plays the 'old coot hanging around the jail" ,Walter Brennan, part and Robert Mitchum plays the Dean Martin alcoholic sheriff part. John Wayne, of course, plays the John Wayne part. Wonder if they used the same script with changes penciled in.

Of course they did, that has been known for years...

Rio Bravo was a huge money maker for John Wayne. So it is only natural (and dumb too), that they tried to make a second killing with a nearly the same vehicle.

You're right... I had forgotten that one...!

Howard Hawks wasn't completely satisfied with the finished product that was Rio Bravo, hence the later El Dorado.  Personally, I far prefer Rio Bravo as I find it more atmospheric.  I think it's a superior movie in spite of Ricky Nelson.
