Not Dixon, Slim, but since there weren't all that many buff hunters, it shouldn't be too hard to narrow it down .  Here's a little help - the subject of this post eventually became a lawman and ended up with a hole in his head.

A man named Sam Holstein had been employed in a job that ___?___ wanted, and one afternoon ___?___ called him out of his hotel room and threatened him. ___?___ then pulled a pistol and fired, whereupon Holstein aggressively leaped a low gate and grappled with his antagonist.

Holstein tore the gun out of ___?___'s hand and shot him. ___?___ fell, rose to his feet, and was promptly shot down again. ___?___ stood up once more, but Holstein shot him a third time. Again ___?___ arose and staggered away, calling for help, but Holstein once more felled him with a final shot. ___?___ lasted six hours, bitterly cursing Holstein until he died at 11:00 P.M.
