Not a Colt expert but I thought first generation guns had the serial number on both the front of the triiger guard and on the grip frame.
I have a similar gun in the same condition made in 1902, that was factory re-finished at some time before I acquired the gun in the early seventies. Mine has a factory letter that shows it with a different caliber and barrel length when it was originally shipped ,so when it was re-finished, they must have re-barreled it and changed the cylinder.

Yep! Something doesn't look right here. Just checked out Kopec's book on the SAA and there are several photos of guns in this serial number range and all have serial numbers on the trigger guard and bottom of grip frame. Any Colt experts want to weigh in on this ?

Colt changed where the 1st Gen guns were marked in 1920.  Prior to 1919 the SAA was marked with the SN on the frame in front of the TG, on the TG frame in front of the TG and on the bottom of the grip frame.  In 1919 some guns were marked on the frame, and the 2nd visable number was on the bottom of the grip frame.  The SN on the TG frame was under the grip panel on the left side.  In 1920 the SN on the grip frame and the trigger guards were under the grip panels on the left side.  Dont hold me to which side of the grip frame and trigger guard were SN'd as I am going from memory.
