I have seen hundreds of old photos with cowboys. But never saw a hat like this one.

Hhmmm, what do you think, which color did the rings have?
White,black,white?
Yellow,blue,yellow?
Or.....
;)

Rube Burrows

Interesting. I have never seen one like that either. I like that Henry though.

Fox Creek Kid

They are common in South America, especially along the Colombian coast in Barranquilla which leads me to believe there is a Latino connection.

River City John

I like it.

Perhaps it's the same idea behind why people put stuff on there car antennas so they can find their car in a crowded lot.
Or, maybe his favorite past time was pitching cards across the room into his hat and this helped his aim.
Or, maybe it was so his head would always hit it's mark when putting his hat on.
Or, maybe he lost that bet with his drinking buddies the night before.
Or, Aunt Tillie's, from back East, awkward Christmas gift.
Or, little Sis got a new paint box.

History is mute on this. As well it should be.

p.s. Or, just a cruel joke the photographer liked to play on these Eastern Dudes who want their likeness took all decked out in the studio props as a rough 'n' tumble Man of the West.

Here's some hats. I took the pictures in Medora in the Teddy Roosevelt museum there.  Cool hats.
