Nope, it was in the original Wayne True Grit. :D

It'll be on AMC this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. (check your local listings), as a matter of fact I think they're having a Wayne retrospective all day.

I thought they already did the all-day John Wayne thing.

You know AMC, if they can get market share showing Independence Day or The Duke, ONE MORE TIME, then by Golly it's a go. ::)

;D Too funny! I thought I was the only one who noticed they've shown Independence Day 15,372 times already!!!  8)

Just a quick comment here.  I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I'm a fan of the book.  Based on some of the comments above (and elsewhere under the "Books and Movies" section), this movie includes details from the book.  For example, the rope sling on the Henry is specifically mentioned in the book.  Mattie uses it as an example of what a lowlife Chaney is.  She suggests that he could have made a nice leather sling from some old harness, but that he's too lazy.  The book also concludes with Mattie attempting to see Rooster when he appeared in Frank James and Cole Younger's wild west show, but getting there too late.  She gives strong opinions about James and Younger and which is more of a gentleman.  I suspect that comes out in the movie.

My wife and I went to see it last weekend. It was great and we thoroughly enjoyed it until.........the end when he ran his horse for hours on end from the afternoon until it collapsed under a bright star lit night hours later.  The time shown approached ridiculous in my opinion.  If you've ever owned a horse, you know that no horse has been born that could do that.  Other than that, it was a great and believable film.  I would also go see it again.

The book also mentions Cogburn reloading his revolver - "Rooster swung the cylinder back in his revolver ...." (Page 170 in my current paper back). This implies that it may have been a Colt 1878. By this point in time Mattie was gun-savvy enough to know the difference, having seen LaBoeuf's Colt SAAs.

A friend sent me a Directors Cut DVD so I got to watch it the other night...(Not much for theater crowds)

Seemed to me Barry Pepper's (Lucky Ned) & Duvall's (Lucky Ned) had the exact same dialog almost word for word.
Chen Lee had almost no screen time and no General Lee.

I did not understand who the Fellow with Bear head coat was ???
He Probable is developed more in the Novel.
Or why the guy was hung and why so high ???

That part was pure Cohen Brothers.  It is not in the book.

I thought Colt's first swing out revolver was the M1889 in .38 caliber.  In the book the story takes place during the winter of 1873, so Rooster's gun is most likely a Smith & Wesson No 3.  Although it is possible he was carrying a S&W #2.

I liked the movie and have been to see it two times. Thought the fellow that did Lucky Ned was GREAT. He looked the part of some one that had had a problem with his mouth. Yes the lines were almost the same, he just delivered them better. I really like the Duke and own most all his westerns, However his True Grit is one of his lesser movies(yes I know he won an award for it). This new one is much better. Like the post says my opinion. Tjack,
why he didn't get the Oscar for The Cowboys, I'll never know. That is, in my mind, one of his better roles. I kinda think his recognition for Rooster Cogburn was a nod to a lifetime achievement award.

Pards, I would be hard put to say which of his films was the one I like most. They go way back, Angel and the Badman, Hodo, and the non western The Quite Man. Then the people that he worked with such as Ben Johnson. A lifetime of making us happy. Tj

I'm guessing that since he stole it off Mr. Ross after killing him, he had no scabbard to go with it, and taking on the run immediately into the Choctaw Nation, no opportunity to get one yet. Rope sling was just something to act as a temporary solution. Besides, as pointed out, Chaney seemed to not be the sharpest tool in the tool chest.

Loved the movie better than the original.
The only bit I missed was the scene where Wayne playing Rooster as so drunk that when he fell off his horse and couldn't get up, he pronounced "We'll camp here." But, it was replaced with an equally good scene. :D

RCJ

Actually the Henry was Chaney's and since he was "Trash" hence the cotton rope. From the book:

And yes Barry Pepper stole Lucky Ned from Duvall, he walked the walk and talked the talk of a desperado in 1873 Oklahoma territory (and that's saying something if you see my avatar ;D)

My wife and I watched both of them back to back, new one first.  We both agreed that the JW one was the best.
