Spur straps question

If I'm making some dove wing spur straps, do I use 5-6 oz. leather or 8-9 oz?

Historically, does anyone know what weight leather was used? I've combed the Internet with little info.

I personally prefer 8-9 oz, I think they will hold up better. Historically, I have realized most gear was made from lighter weight leather. I believe leather was much better back then also, that's why they could get by with lighter weight?? Just my $0.02!
