How fast can you draw and shoot a schofield?

Schofields, to me, take some getting used to compared to the SAA guns in terms of drawing, cocking and bringing them into position.  You also can't speed shoot them as easy as a SAA as you can't  pull and drop hammer over and over while trigger is squeezed.
How do you guys compete and handle yourselves drawing and speedshooting up against guys with SAAs?

St. George

It depends entirely on you.

How much practice ammunition can you afford, and how much range time can you put in?

No shooter I know bought a Schofield because they wanted to shoot fast - they're not 'natural' to the average shooter's hand, as you've found, and that's an important thing in target acquisition - even at the super-short C&WAS distances.

The only way you'll figure out 'speed' is to practice and practice and practice some more.

Good Luck!

any particular why gunmen and outlaws like Jesse James and John Wesley Hardin prefered them?  The most obvious part is unload and reload ability, but it seems to me they would prefer being able to handle it well and fast

St. George

'Feel' - most likely...

That, and the love of new things that were soon seen in advertising and in the mail order catalogs - all of which purported to be the 'best on the market'.

Back then, advertising was relentless - and promised the world...

Also - depending upon ready supply - the Model 3 may've been the only available piece when a man needed to purchase a revolver, and unlike today - back then, the idea of a 'shooting battery' wasn't thought of.

Day-to-day life in the Old West wasn't a continual 'Cowboy Action Stage-Shooting' affair - the guns seeing the most action in real life were likely pocket revolvers, since open carry was soon done away with in town - once the towns became 'civilized', but the idea of having something stuck away was appealing to many.

I'd still go with the way a weapon felt to an individual as being the primary reason it was purchased and used - and we still buy that way today.

Shooting a Schofield with both hands on it is a waste, they work much better dualist or gunfighter, you learn real quick how to pull it and cock it without tiggerfinger pressure till sight aquisition, which is very good with a Schofield as they have a great balance.

to me, shooting any handgun with two hands is a waste (unless your shooting something 100 yards away).  It's a Handgun, not a HandSgun

Ah My Dear Monsieur Doug -

I too was greatly taken by the look, balance and overall feel of the Schofield! To answer your original question,
" How fast can you draw and shoot a schofield?"

Whilst fondling one at my most favorite purveyor of firearms, I was allowed to load it up with snap caps and strap it on with a crossdraw holster and "pull leather".

I found that I was able to draw, aim, and fire "duelist" in under 10 seconds every time.

BTW I consistently finish in the bottom 10% timewise  ;D ;D ;D

I guess in the end, it's really shot placement that counts, not how many you can put down at once

While the guys you mention did make their livings with guns, they didn't shoot like we do. There really was no such thing as a quick draw. Most gunfights were brutal affairs, including shooting in the back, or attacking with guns already drawn. Quick draw seldom entered into it.

Personally, I find the Schofield grip awkward. I have to reach much further forward with my thumb to cock the hammer than I do with a SAA. However, if I found an affordable original Schofield I would buy it in a minute, just to have one. I don't much care about shooting fast anyway.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Schofields are fun not fast as are their cousins the Russians

Clint Eastwood did okay against a whole barroom of crooked deputies with a Schofield ;)

Yeah, I knew gunfights of the west weren't Matt Dillon style fast draw in the street incidents but knock down drag out fights.

I just popped off 6 rounds out back.  1....pause...2,3,4,5,6.   The last five were probably fired off in 3-4 seconds in my guesstimation.  The trick to me was firing off as soon as you cocked the gun, cocking it in such a way that the sight falls right onto the target after your thumb is through pulling back the hammer

Of Course, With snap caps one can only achieve the (desired) "CLICK-CLICK" Amongst the benefits of live fire, besides the lovely smoke and boom, is the honest recoil that sets the revolver up for the next cocking of the hammer....

Don't fergit the style points. I just got my 7 inch barrel Schofield and have only used it in one match so far and love it. My 64 year old eyes especially love that wide rear sight notch.
