Doug,

tell us a bit more about your rounds and the hardness of the lead that is being used for the bullets.

Might yours be extremely soft by any chance?

Most (all ?) factory loads are moderately hard... Lyman #2 or so. For no other reason that I can think of, it would be because it is the cheapest alloy to come by.

What are you running thru your 6-shooter?

Let us know how this gets resolved as we are all interested I am sure.

I  also think that the cylinder/barrel gap, is too short.. as they said in Uberti, .so when the gun was cold, it worked, but when fired, because of minimum dillatation, it just couldnt rotate well.

very easy  to solve, just with a file, filing the front face of the forcing cone. I had to do it in my Taurus, and in an UBERTI 1858.

a piece of paper should run freely between the ciylinder and barrel when gun is closed, and we should be able to put it into there and through when the gun is closed, and hammer cockered.

this Uberti  1858 would jam after 1 cilynder and I solved it quickly, until I got a gap of 1/10 th of 1 mm...or 0,1 mm, around 0,004 ", which is a small/moderate gap, around the thickness of a piece of standard paper.

same with the TAURUS, the gun would rotate well in cold state, but when warm, after a few rounds, it would jam...solved with care and a medium file.

it might be other reason, but a change in ammo, I am afraid, and good cleaning, might not solve the problem it it is in a gap too small.

doing so will void manufacturers guarantee for sure.

all the best

Hello, I am New Here. But I do shoot the Uberti Schofield about 16 years now.

The biggest problem with the Schofield is a design fault. When you have a .45 colt like I have do take off the cilinder and look at the forcingcone. The forcingcone is paperthin by the cilinderax and gets olmost always ripped. Mine forcingcone is ripped to. There is a tiny crack. I have seen Schofields with a complete part of the forcingcone missing. That gun was gonne it had no accuratesy what so ever.

But I have shot more that 10.000 rounds true it. It has several replaced parts like the trigger and bold. It is still a nice revolver. All do after 16 years it gets a little worn out and I gonna replace the revolver for a 3e generation Colt SAA.

I am also having problems with my Cavalry Schofield.  It is a Navy Arms import and Uberti will not repair it.  I told them Navy Arms is out of business but they provided me with a telephone number, which of course was disconnected.  I need to find a competent Gunsmith in MA or CT who knows these revolvers and can repair them.  Any suggestions pards?

What is wrong with your Schofield?

Trailrider

If tells you anything, the Army got rid of the Schofields after a few years of use, NOT because of the ammo length, but because of "too many mechanical problems"! (Problems not specified.) They went back to the Colt's SAA...until some bright soul in the Ordnance Dept. decided a DA .38 LC would be a "better" arm. It was...until the troops tried to stop a bunch of hopped up Moro tribesmen on Mindanao in the Phils! Back came the Colt's SAA's...until the Army adopted the 1911. Then they messed up again with the Beretta M92 in 9mm. (So the 1911 is coming back...again!)
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

The cylinder will not turn freely.  It won't consistently go to full cock.  Opening the action will clear it momentarily, but when you bring it back to battery it starts all over again.

The original OP refused to do it, but have you measured the cylinder gap?  These things hate any kind of fouling and a lot of them have cylinder gaps that are to small or the back of the barrel isn't square.  Either is easily fixed.

I have 3 Schofiled's. Two Uberti's and one ASM imported by Cimarron back when they first started selling them. The only one I ever had a problem with was the ASM had a very tight latch to open the barrel. It had to be slightly refitted and is now a great little gun.

I've put hundreds if not thousands of rounds through them (I use only smokeless so that could help) but I've never had an issue with how they function. Maybe I'm just fortunate. I feel I am because I really love this model of gun.  ;D

1st sgt Frits king.
Have you removed the safety devise behind the hammer? No. Maybe when you do It solves the problem.
It is very easy to remove. It was the first thing what I get out of my Schofield when I got the revolver.

This is my Uberti Schofield
16 year in service.

Does the cylinder turn freely when the action is open? Does it bind up when it's clean or only after you've shot it a few times?

The safety was removed by Drydock before I got it.  The cylinder binds when clean.  I left it in the solvent tank for almost a month and that didn't help.

Does the cylinder turn freely when the action is open?
If it does, it's binding somewhere other than the front of the cylinder. If it doesn't it's binding against the front of the cylinder or on the backstrap.

Hi,

It looks like I should count my blessings that my old Navy Arm Schofields are so smooth ... I have always taken for granted that the smoothness was part of the design ,,,,

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

OK 1stsgt. Is the cilinderax straight? Is the ejectorrod straight? It is indeed a strange problem.

Doug.38PR

Well, a local gunsmith sent it back to Uberti, twice, after having continued to jam.  They finally said it was a flaw in the gun and they replaced the gun sending me a whole new gun.  The hammer is a little different, the wooden grips are a little wider.  I like it.  AND it shoots well.  I've put about 30 rounds through it and so far no jamming.  Shoots straight too!
